Good post Chas ... the issue then would be ...

Why tout how "special" the new is from the <machine of producing motorcycles>. And of course, there-in lies the rub. It WAS touted by those same folks as a "special, reserved, esoteric, and elevated" buying experience.

My 2008 Star Raider was first introduced as any other Star motorcycle would be. Don't remember the EXACT date but Sept 8th, 2008 comes to mind. Called my same dealer, ordered it, and it arrived right around mid-December.

What did ordering the Priority Delivery the day it was offered for sale, but fully 3 MONTHS prior to any other new model (and COMPLETELY NEW btw ... not just "refreshed" Star may have introduced get me? Nothing at all.

I'll tell you what it got Star ... interest on my money. Odds are I will have gotten my Raider (which I luv btw) sooner than my by delivery date.

Star Motorcycles fell short here ... no doubt about it.

BTW ... I'm picking mine up from Sportland Motorports in Urbana ...whereabouts is you?

Mine will be coming through DGY Motorsports in Downers Grove, IL. The dealership was formerly "Downers Grove Yamaha" now just known as DGY. They are a good buncjh of guys and have been good to me. I believe the is a special bike in every way and I am sure the guys who did the research, designed it, and setup the production did as well. Once those steps are taken, the whole process is in the hands of people who in essence are drones, they carry out the repetitive manufacturing tasks and afterwards solve the transportation problem. There is nothing wrong with the drones of the world, it is just he or she probably doesn't share the dream in the same way that both the designer/engineers and the end user will. They may not see it as anythong more than just a product. That was my point. I would like to think otherwise, but if true, it would explain a few things. Hope yours comes quick.

Again ... I certainly appreciate your perspective here but I think it it mis-directed. There is no question that Yamaha knows how to build motorcycles (by "drone" or any other method ). I know folks that have 100K miles on their R1 with NO major issues. Taken at face value, most folks would go ... "Jeeze, that's unbelieveable for a motorcycle."

Now consider that the R1 motor is <realistically> a full-on race motor - tuned to extract every ounce of potential out of the 997cc displacement. Given enough time and money, ANYONE has the ability to make a motor fast ... very few have the ability to make that same motor the "Energizer Bunny" (it just lasts, and lasts, and lasts ...)

Yamaha knows how to build motorcycles.

The issue here is they are falling short in the Priority Delivery Program. The sad thing is ... the bump against the has NOTHING to do with whether or not it is an awesome bike ... but is merely a glitch in the administration of the "Buying Experience".

I'm sure that the Bugatti Veyron purchase program has a "high-touch" factor for THEIR customers ...

BTW ... this isn't Yamaha's first rodeo with the Priority Delivery Program. Heard from my Dealer that they did it with the FJR-1300 when it came out. He said it was a disaster then as well

Hope you get yours quick too ... Ok - that sounded a bit like me speaking to the wife.

I totally agree with your post and maybe I didn't really say what I meant. I have no issue with the quality of Yamaha products. I bought a 1998 new and have put on about 65K miles. After all that, I coughed up $1k for a deposit on a bike at that point in time I hadn't laid eyes on. My whole point was that they probably don't put as much emphasis on getting the bike out to us and paying attention to the order of delivery as compared to the order in which deposits were collected as we do. We all have nothing but time waiting for our new maxes and probably have put more thought and time into trying to foretell their next move than they have. We have analyzed it fowards, backwards, and sideways. At this point in time, they are concerned with the logistics of moving product. That's all.

Agreed - my point is that Star Motorcycles should have done this prior to ever establishing the program.

Failing to plan is planning to fail.

Production numbers were set prior to implementation.
This is easy. It is SO easy in fact, that Star **should** be able to tell me exactly where my bike is at any given time.

For the first time in my life, I'm very disappointed in Yamaha; and even more so in Star Motorcycles - at least from a "branding perspective".

But the problem is you knew about this when you ordered it. They never gave anyone an exact date of when the bike was arriving, just the month.
How can Yamaha be the blame? They may have had a last minute issue with the bikes that needed fixed before shipping thereby delaying the process for a month.
They sent out an email to the dealerships stating there is a delay.
I can only imagine the amount of programming They would have to write up to track the orders exclusivley for each person so they can get blow by blow data on thier bikes. Its not as simple as some of you may think.
I would rather wait another month to make sure my bike is rock solid before it hit the dealer floor and I speed off on it. Rather than get a recall stating the front wheel will shatter because we were in a hurry to meet a deadline.

Again, I have no real issue with Yamaha. I was just making the statement that we have a more vested interest in the interworkings of the delivery process than they probably do. My original delivery month was January. Even if it shows up on time, there probably won't be much I could do with it. So far I have no beef with them.

If FedEx can track their packages on a daily basis world wide, I would think that Yamaha/Star could do the same with a much, MUCH smaller number, with many, MANY fewer shipping and destination sites.

I am ok with the wait and I'm not pissed, etc. I just thought about that fact and am a little perplexed as to why I can't be told where my bike is.
