FINALLY - THE RACING ECU DOES WORK ON EURO BIKES

Just as we previously discussed, the Racing ECU from StarMax does not work on my european VMX17.
I received it yesterday and immediatly removed the filter cover, took off the standard unit and fixed ECU.
Switched on and nothing strange happened; everything lit-up, all gauges showing normal readings, the bike did the standard check-up procedure, including pump priming and ended with the typical beeping sound, waiting for me to press the start-up button. At the time I was thrilled to bits as everything seemed to be working fine......
But it only took a couple of tries to sink my dreams into a deep depresion.... . The engine turned and gave no signs or error messages; it just didn't start.
I checked for errors (pressing both configuration buttons and turning the key on and that was when I saw on the multi function screen, just where the miles/km are shown, a symbol "ER-4" instead of the total km done; that made me think it might have to do with the fact that my speed is in Km while the Racing ECU is in miles; I have no idea, but I'm back to square one.
Check this short video when the engine does not start with the R-ECU:
takes you to a test I did later on as I reinstalled the standard ECU; it started up immediately.
To end the drama, a few pics of my failure: imageevent.com/wforest/racingecunotcompa...d=1cyam4v6x3.tiger_s
You can appreciate the error message and some other details such as the pin arrangement on the two connectors; maybe someone can give some insight into the reason why this is happening. At least I did serve as a guinnea pig, so at least I save some from making the same mistake.
Oh and thanks for nothing Yamaha; maybe some day you will be a bit more helpful, just by giving more info about our bikes....

Long Shot: Try it with the RED key, the one that re-codes a new ECU (...even though I know the US model doesn't have it, ...perhaps the immobiliser is dormant in the US one)
Sorry if you've already tried it but I haven't had time to look all thru' the vids & pics.
It seems that the issue is a link up error..between ecu and other electronics... I just dont have the electronic background knowledge to help otherwise i would... but it seems that the story is not just the ecu... maybe something else in the guts of the max is supplying data to the ecu and the switch is not working... you may need to switch something else or maybe an after market set-up (UFO perhaps).
We could possibly have enough brain power in the forum to help you with this... my guess... good luck!

Just a thought. Did you disconnect the battery before you swapped the ECU? If not, give that a try. On some vehicles a battery disconnect will "reset" the ECU. Maybe the various ECUs need to be powered up simultaneously.

Thanks to all for the quick responses, not like YOMAMA.....
HossMan, you had your doubts and now they are confirmed.
I was actually expecting a lot more errors, such as not even being able to turn the engine, big flashing warnings and so on, but instead all well till you try and start the engine...
And HossMan as you can see in the videos andd pics, I did use the red key...
Amaurycdsf thanks for the great links on the ER-4, on the Star manual it says:
Fault code No. ER-4
Item ECU internal malfunction (input signal error): non-registered data has been received from the meter.
ASO.....
Problem here is that they don't mention the option of installing a MPH R-ECU on a KMH Bike; that could be the source of the malfunction. If only I could connect my laptop to the ECU and change the MPH to KMH.. you know, just like other manufacturers do. Wonder if my spanish dealer has a program and some hardware to connect the bike to a computer and be able to configure such things; R1 and R6 have been around for some time... anyway, I'll keep you posted.

And Larryc7777, I did actually thought of that, but I had seen one of the great videos VMAXGURU makes and it seemed to me he did not touch the battery when installing the R-ECU.
On the other hand, I know that many ECU manufacturers warn you to remove the ECU fuse prior to disconnecting or reconnecting the battery to avoid damaging the unit.

by watching the video you will see that when the red key is being used the other standard black key is on the key ring as well, in the australian owners manual it states on page 4-1 it states" Do not put two keys of any immobilier on the same key ring" and on the same page it also states that the ECU and a TRANSPONDER are part of immobilier system, so it would be reasonable to assume that ecu and transponder are not compatiable with US ecu

Hi Ariel4g1000,
I normally use that weird "thing" with a round head you keep in a kind of a barrel... And that was the first thing I used; then I thought about the red key and used it in the key holder I keep both black and red keys... It didn't work with my daily key alone, still you are right in saying that no two coded keys should be close when inserting one in, so I could re-try again with the red alone....
However I'm more prone into thinking about the other cause you mention, being that the US R-ECU is just not compatible with a Euro bike or any other with an inmobiliser coded key system.
I knew that this could happen and I risked it anyway, but let's not just dump the whole thing yet.

Gid day Spanish flyer.
About the two keys, you keep them in the key pouch, i think that you are not supposed to keep both keys together at all, not just when they are inserted but at all times, i keep mine in separate rooms. it looks like the only way to really find out is to take a trip north and treat vmaxbabe to a great dinner and try to talk her or beast to try their ecus
