So I had my new tires put on today (Metz 880) and after putting 9000 miles on the stock tires, the ride home felt like a completely different bike. I did take it quite easy coming home but there was a very noticable difference. I felt like the weight of the bike was completely gone and it turns again. I was definately fighting the bike through turns with the old tires for what must have been the last 5000 miles at least, maybe more. I mentioned to the guy that did the work that the bike habeen pulling to the left for quite some time and he agreed. He said he took it for a ride before and after he did the work and he too noticed a big change. He said my old set was badly scalloped. So what is the norm for tire breakin? I feel relief but ride with the same caution I had the day I picked it up

I didn't know there was a break in for tires! Just go from all the manufacturers I have dealt with.

Its not really considered a "break in" period. But, The tire manufacturers put a coating of sealer on the tires to help preserve them from oxidation. The tire with that coating on it has greatly reduced traction. So you want to scrub off the coating by casual riding for about like DR said 50 miles or so. Just be careful and definitely watch out for water because that will give you a slip and slide on two wheels. And its not a "magic" 50 miles. Be aware of potential slippage even after the 50. I hope this helps.

9000 miles on a set of tires on a Gen2 Vmax? Honestly don't know how you did it!
I would average 5000 miles on a rear tire on the Gen1 at best. My Gen 2's front tire is wearing heavily on both sides at 2700 miles and I think I babied it in cornering and braking so far. It looks like it will need replaced long before the rear tire. I can see where you feel a big difference after the cupped tires were replaced. They seem to sneak up gradually until one day you really notice it. Ken |

Completely Different Bike You ever think maybe the guy gave you back the wrong bike? Huh? To "break in" the tires I usually head to a parking lot and do a lot of circling left and right slowly but leaning as much as possible to hit all of tires sidewall. 10 minutes or so of that and your good to go. |

I saw a rider this past January buy a new set of tires, 17 degrees outside temperature, chemicals on the road from expected icing, he pulled onto the highway at a very sharp angle, accelerated quickly to merge into traffic and the cruiser just spun a 180 and threw him off. Disclolated his shoulder etc. He tried to blame it on everything under the sun except his ignorance of not knowing how to properly break in a new rear tire. Any motorcycle shop that does not advise a customer of riding at slower speeds on new tires until the tires wear off the protective coating and warm up is not doing their customers any favors. |

The people that are riding should also know that . But a good dealer will tell you |

I even had the cycle shop tell me to be careful when I purchased new tires for my SCOOTER. Now that's service.
