TOPIC: Swirl Marks
Swirl Marks 1 year 10 months ago #1

My paint work on my 09 is starting to show it's age.
Most normal people wouldn't be ble to tell my wife says, but I can see it and it has to get better. Has anyone used Scratch X 2.0 before? The swirl marks and micro scratches are tiny and visible in the clear coat. I read that this stuff works. Anyone used it or anything else with good results? Now I know that I should probably use one of those Orbital rotary tools, but don't want to spend $400 on one for now Thanks in advance Kris |

Hi , It's a very light compound you really should try a small spot like the bottom of the front fender to see the 09's paint is soft
should be buffed by a pro to look the best Kris , I use Turtle wax Color magic in black the wax is pigmented black and fills and hides pretty good even use it on my black ceramic cans , You should be able to pick up a 5 or 6 inch orbital buffer at an auto parts cheap you can't really burn the paint using light pressure but a spin buffer in untrained hands hands can do damage . |

I would not reccomend using a buffer, the plastic fenders heat up really easy and you can burn through your paint in a heart beat, not so bad using on the faux tank but with such a small area better off doing it by hand. As for the scratch X 2.0 it does work but if I remember correctly it requires finishing with a another finer polish, if not your paint may not have any swirls left but will look dull. I like the Mothers line of products, with there 3 stage system it is almost impossible to screw it up and leave a really nice deep shine and removes most if not all swirk marks and small sratches!

I cut the lacquer right off a black 1990 560 SEL Benz with Meguiar's professional fine cut cleaner (2).
Hundreds of hours to detail this car all by hand - I have to say that this car out shined a brand new one, but the lacquer was gone for good. I never used scratch X and even though I have a nice buffer as a gift, I would never consider using it. Like Mercer, I use Mothers three step product as well as their clay bar and detailing spray. Pinnacle detailing kit is my newest adventure in hand rubbing and finishing - expensive stuff ($200.00) but I'll give it a go. Best Regards, Jack |

Thank you the replies guys.
I have the Mothers 3 stage system and I have had good results with it as well, but does nothing to remove fine scratches or swirl marks I need something that will work a bit deeper and take a cut off and then go over it with Mothers Sealer/Glaze/Wax. I think I will listen to your advice around using a buffer. It sounds like I could do more damage then good and that seems to be the general consensus here. I have no problem putting in the hours and some good elbow grease. I just want some good results at the end of it. So I got me some good stuff today. I think I will give this Meguiars stuff a go. I got some Swirl X, Scratch X, Ultimate compound, colour X. I will try it on a small area first wherenit isn't so noticeable and see if I get some results and then go over the bike. The finish at the moment just isn't there for me. Will try and take some photos of before and after. Just to see if I actually got a better finish or do I just feel better that I tried. Wish me luck |

Kris...try this... That will definitely take the swirls out. I've got the same issue Kris....I've tried a few different things including a professional "glaze" designed for new paint. I haven't been happy with the results. This stuff does an amazing job....I've see the results myself. www.waxdepot.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen...S31&Category_Code=BA I haven't bought it yet I balked when the shipping was as much as the price of the stuff (I know you will laugh at that with what you pay for shipping down under) but I'm going to buy it soon.....well, depending on what you report back. |

Try some color match 3m Glaze with a foam glaze pad on a SLOW speed buffer... Can be had at a professional PPG/House of Colour/ Auto Paint store...
The process is designed to remove fine swirls before wax. Can't do better than this process... |
