It looks like it just needs a real good cleaning to me.....lots of times you will see some serious fading on the engine paint. Looks pretty good on this one. Yes the black engine paint looked real good, some of the bare aluminum just needs some elbow grease. The engine it self sounded great, no engine noise, crisp response once it warmed up for a minute. |

To bad your not closer. I have a 94 I am going over with a fine tooth comb that sat for a while that will be around the same price. I repainted the engine, installed new fork seals, changed oil & coolant, new battery, redoing carbs today I want this thing right before I sell it. I should have it all finished up by Monday & it will be ready to ride. Its all stock except for diffrent body set & Corbin seat & powdercoated scoops.

I think i am going to pass on this one, they come up for sale from time to time and i will just hold out for one that has been taken better care of. With the Gen 2 coming home in a couple weeks just won't have the time this one needs to bring back to life.

they made the gen 1 up until 07 so i would think plenty of new parts are still available.

Well I went and checked out the 1989 VMAX and overall seems to be fairly clean for being 23 years old. My first thing noticed is a glycol leak coming from a crossover pipe or somewhere at the pump fittings (pic below). The frame is good, no signs of damage at the crash bar area or steering stop at the neck. The fork tube chrome is good with no pitting, tires look to be original from 23 years ago. It has been slid on its side as you can see the scrapes on the brake lever and RH side scoop but nothing to severe. Paint is faded on the fenders mostly and seat covers would need re done. I would say right off the bat would be tires, brake pads, glycol leak repair, battery, seat covers and overall clean and detail. We put a charger on the battery and turned on the key and fuel pump primed, bunch of servo noise so i assume the v boost was working. Shut it off and on again to verify the servo noise, sounded normal and all electrical seemed to function. Bike started right up with the choke and within 45 sec choke was turned off and idle seemed good, good throttle response and sound was deep and throaty with that pipe. I would think 1k to get it road worthy at a minium and many hours of my time to clean it up to my standards so at this time I didn't make an offer. Also what is the key switch under the faux tank cover left side? The ignition key seemed to fit but wouldn't turn just curious if its keyed different than the ignition and what it releases? Whats it worth? Scrapes on RH scoop Clean fork tubes, glycol on floor Left side with steering stabilizer RH side 16k Miles Leak I'd drop 2k on this in a heartbeat.. You can look for 1 thats been taken better care of, but I don't think you'll find anything near 15k miles. Most will have been beat on or have high miles or both. This one seems genuine and fairly straight.. I think it has great potential for her to end up with a great bike you can enjoy riding with |

You are right on the low miles of this bike, and it does have a lot of potential. If i wasn't buying the Gen 2 I would have been all over this, a nice project bike. I don't think its going anywhere for a while being dead of winter, i pick my Gen 2 when i get back from my next shift at work around Feb 10th so once i get it home and i still have some funds left i may reconsider it if its still for sale.
My problem will be i will want to work on my bike and not the other lol. |

I was thinking along the same lines... the bike seems like a great deal and hard to pass up. If there was a bike local to my area with similar miles & price, I'd buy it today and then polish it up all winter.

There will be no passing on the Gen 2, already bought way too many parts for its arrival lol. My Gen 2 is a brand new 0 mile 2009 left over that i found in the fall, made a deal with the owner of the dealership with a cash deposit with agreement to pick it up sometime in February (My yearly bonus is always paid out last Friday of Jan) so i didn't have to finance the bike and could buy it out right.
This Gen 1 would be for the wife if i decide to get it but having the new bike with lots of mods planned and also the up keep on the race car for the upcoming season and i could see the old one being neglected in the corner. Only if i could clone myself would i have the time to work on all three, seriously though i am still thinking about it and could possibly do some work to get it going then next winter would have more time to really get it cleaned up. I don't think it will sell anytime soon, not until late march or early april when it starts to warm up and spring fever starts setting in for folks up here but you never know. I will keep my eye on it until i pick up the new bike, if its still there than maybe if i can part with waiting on the Brocks pipe and Nash flash for a while |
