TOPIC: 2010 Red Vmax Clearance Sale

2010 Red Vmax Clearance Sale 1 year 1 month ago #1

I am putting down a dp for a 2010 Red V Max. Its on a clearance sale and would like to close on it fast. I am buying the bike in Nevada and bringing it home to San Diego, CA. My concern is what the sales person said regarding registration. The way the salesman explained to me was: I could buy the bike in Nevada but i have to provide an address or P O Box in Nevada (then do a forwarding address to my home) to register the bike in Nevada. He said the bike's emission is not CA approved so i have to register it in Nevada and wait 7500 miles to re-register it in California. Why? I am replacing the full exhaust system anyways. Please advise.

Not sure there is a good explanation other that this is the law!
Basically you cannot register a "new" bike (new = less than 7,500 miles) which is not CA approved.
The only exception is that if you can prove you reside in another state and THEN move to CA, you can take your vehicle with you (even if less than 7500 miles). From what I understand they are very strict with this.

see more from CA DMV site :

Before Buying a Vehicle From Out of State - Be Sure You Can Register It in California FFVR 29

Be Sure You Can Register it in California

The Bottom Line

If you are a California resident and acquire a new car, truck or motorcycle from another state, it must be certified to meet California smog laws in order to be registered here. This includes certain diesel powered vehicles. DMV cannot accept an application to register a vehicle in California that does not qualify for registration (Health and Safety Codes [H&SC] §§43150 – 43156.)

What Is Considered a new Vehicle?

California considers any vehicle with less than 7,500 miles on the odometer at the time of purchase or trade by a California resident or business to be a new vehicle. This holds true whether or not the vehicle has been registered in another state.

I also suggest you contact CVVMAX who lives in Chula Vista – he is our local expert and might be able to make suggestions or know of local deals (send him a PM)

I know of TWO Vmaxes for sale not too far from you :
• New 2012 model for full MRSP price
• "As new" 2011 model for $16,990 (221 miles)

both at
Performance Motorsports
32701 Calle Perfecto
San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675
www.ocyamaha.com

Both have been advertised on Craigslist for some time so I imagine that there might be room for negociation.

I had the same issue with my bike when I moved to California.
I registered my van but had to wait on the bike that had less then 7500 miles.
Ca dmv even gave me grief & asked why I didn't register it when I moved there.
I think I told them I just got around to bringing the bike into the state but in the mean time I racked up over the 7500.
Even my mc license was not totally transferable. They make me take the writen permit, which I barely passed due to couple trick questions. Once I passed the written, the road test was waived, since I had a mc license from ny.

Personally, I'd never advise anybody to do what you are considering. California is EVIL when it comes to registering cars/trucks/bikes/offroad stuff.

I did pretty much what you are considering, but that was 25 years ago (bought a car in Indiana, moved it to CA 4 months later).

Also, my dirt bike buddies are getting retroactively punished by the DMV in CA. They license their "off road only" motorcycle, then some monts later have their registrations revoked. Thi sis happening to guys who buy out of stated registered bikes, as well as bikes they previously were able to register in CA.

I'd buy a CA model and not worry about all the other crap. Just another reason I left that state...

Nothing like living in a state that has $ problems. CA gouges it's residents for all they are worth! Well unless you are an illegal resident, than most things are free!!! One reason I will visit my brothers living there but never consider moving back to the state.
