TOPIC: Tire repair for small puncture ?

Tire repair for small puncture ? 1 year 1 month ago #1

My rear tire was slowly deflating (about 10 pounds per day).
So I inpected the tire and found a small screw right at the bottom of a groove.

I am not really familiar with motorcycle tire repair. What I have done , is that I pushed-in a tire repair kit (you know the kind of small rope with tar on it ).

It seems to hold on but I doubt it will last and I don't really thrust that thing (you know , at 100 mph...).

What are the other options that are cost effective ?

My dealer is closed today. I would prefer not to unmount the wheel if possible.

Thanks

Mush

On this bike, get a new tire. If it's a rear, time for a smoke show.

I have a the same rope type plug on mine as well..

Right after i installed my 011 shinko 200/50-18 with 200miles on it..I got a nail in it and pluged it..

I have OVER a 1000miles on it and have been to the 1/8miles 2 time with it.. and a good burn out with it to seal it in good..

I've hit the roads hard with many of times with zero issues, but If i was u get the a new tire..Shinko 011 and will luv it..

Since you don't want to unmount the tire, you've already done what you can. The rope plug will hold just fine. It's more of a mental thing than a safety issue. Just forget the plug is there and ride it as you normally would. The tire's not going to pop/explode while riding & it should last untill the tread is gone and you're ready to change the tire.

It REALLY is a mental thing..ANd it starts to creep in around 110mph in a loooong swipper.. :S

Other then that, it will be just fine.

Keep an eye on it, if ya plug it.
Keep checking the pressure everyday until you feel that plug is holding the air & there's no worries.

I use rubber cement coating a sticky rope plug. Slime makes good plugs that they say bond with heat.
Sometimes a sideways puncture or right between the thread pattern can be tuff to plug.

Little bit of dish soap mixed with water, sprayed on the plug can show if it's leaking. If it bubbles, it's leaking. No bubbles, it's fine.

Seriously?!?!? Guess I am outnumbered but I stand firm. I have seen you guys beat to death a discussion about speed ratings on tires. Now its OK to plug a speed rated tire? With the amount of torque it can apply and the speeds it can achieve, No way would I ride a plugged tire on this bike. Only way I would consider it would be if it was properly repaired with a patch from the inside. Even then, I would change it to a new one as soon as possible. Cheap insurance. My life and my $20k bike are worth it. JMHO.

You ARE rolling the dice to some extent. A plug done right is pretty secure...but a rear tire that goes flat quickly is a catastrophic event. If you hit a turn at any speed with a flat rear tire you are going straight...no ifs, ands or buts.

I've plugged numerous rear tires on my Busa & NEVER has 1 failed or even leaked.I also don't install a new rear tire until I see threads showing. The tire always wears out before the plug & I run the bike @ speeds up to 165.A patched tire is the safest but do you really want to remove the wheel & unmount the tire to fix it?I feel just as safe fixed either way.You more likely to be hit by a cager or struck by lightening than have a repaired tire fail. You know the bottom line is it's your choice.
