TOPIC: Vmax radiator

Vmax radiator 1 year 1 month ago #1

Thinking about cleaning up the radiator area on my gen 2... I think the reservoir will fit in the tool pouch area with a slight modification and then I can remove the lower radiator. With the help of Brett Horton , I have already added a fan override switch and I will soon add a second fan to the upper. I am also thinking of running the ice blue radiator fluid to help with the added heat. Does anyone here have an opinion on this matter

That depends on how you're going to use the Max.. If just for racing that's fine, but in heavy traffic I doubt 1 radiator will cut it.

Whats up Jody, Darryl here. Congrats on those killer track numbers bro. Brett told me about the lower rad removal idea. I think it would help but the formula they use to calculate the volume of coolant needed for the bike will be thrown way off. I doubt the ice and an extra fan will compensate for the loss. When I had a R3, some of the guys on that forum wanted to do essentially the same thing and some of the "rocket scientist" on that forum found that removing as little as a 1/4 of the original diameter/volume of the rad caused the bike to run VERY hot. They where forced to simply build a one-off rad that was more vertical than horizontal. Their issue was more with the size of the rad and how it stuck out horizontally on the bike rather than weight. They wanted the reduced weight but it was secondary to aesthetics.
It wouldn't cost much to give it a try though. There could be an overage in needed volume on the max. Yamaha seems to overkill some things.

Maybe 1 rad and NOS?
Like Bob said, track use only.

I looked at relocating the reservoir into the tool pouch area first. I will ride it and see if anything changes. I don't think it will matter though. I may then just bypass the lower radiator and add another fan to the top and see what happens . I am not sure but I hope I will be able to compensate for the lack of water with the extra fan. I do see where u are coming from . The only reason I can see with Yamaha adding the lower would be due to an overheating issue. If I can get around these issues then I will be a happy guy.. I will take one step at a time though... I hope to get ack to the track this week . I think I can get some mid 1.4s and hopefully get some 9.70s on the other end... I havent been so obsessed with a bike in years.. All I want to do is go faster and faster....oh yeah, I blame that on Brett too

It has been reported and I experienced it as well (4th of July), that while idling, prolonged in traffic, the Vmax can overheat..

What about the way the bottom rad helps to cool the engine oil or at least keep it at a more constant temp. The lower rad would be the area that has the cooler coolant as by time it hits the lower rad it has been cooled through the top rad as it worked its way down...

So would this not make a big difference to oil temp if it were not there and you do not use the oil cooler that is between the filter and engine block?

Just curious...
