TOPIC: Gen2 key replication
Gen2 key replication 1 year 1 month ago #1
|
I believe this to be an old thread/subject, yet, just to repeat what I learned yesterday....
A buddy O'mine and I were playin on the bikes around town the other day and I had misplaced my key at the lunch/pool establishment. I was stuck......finally found it on the floor where I had dropped it..yadda, yadda.. Well, decided to have my locksmith make a couple duplicates. He did some research w his supplier(s) and said that the Gen 2 key was a Yamaha key and would cost(him) 45 US dolla per key for replacement. I said, 'well, the cut doesnt look to 'special', it's just the head of the key.' Then he said, 'let me go look at what I have out in my office/truck(he's mobile)'. Short story long, he had a couple Gen 1 templet keys(or at least the last Gen1 year manufactured) and made replicates. Well, I put them in Max and voila, we're in business!!! Gen 1 keys, are not just a yamaha specialty(available to public locksmiths and such)and they work for Max2. And the cost now???? Nothing.....(he's one of my patients So for you folks(newbies perhaps....uh..mmm in USA anyways), that didnt know, dont pay Yammi's price... Ride Fun my friends(and stay thirsty).... |

Ace hardware stores can make key for gen2. It,s just a plain metal key but fits fine and stores in the wallet real good. Price 3.00 dollars

Yes, similar story for me. I had to go to a "real locksmith" and he made up a couple of spares for me. I think they were about $3.00 each also. Worked perfect!

Thanks for posting. I thought you had to buy em from Yamaha as well since they're numbered and matched to your vin.

Yeah, you deffinitely have to use a mom and pops style hardware store like Ace or True Value. The big box stores can't do it because they just don't have the key selection. Their cutting machines don't allow any variations or custom cutting either.
My dad has owned a hardware store since the '60s and it drives me crazy to go into Lowes to get a 'common' key made and they don't have it or can't make it work because it just needs a bit shaved off here or there. I could make a pipe wrench work in a Mercedes back in the day. And no, not the way most of you are thinking. Ok, I may have exaggerated there a tiny bit....but I was good a making keys. - Grover |
