I looked into the 5.1 brake fluid and this is what my finding are with it..
DOT 5.1 has the same base chemistry as DOT 3 and DOT 4 and therefore does NOT offer advantages of DOT 5 silicone does.. Another point of confusion is that most ppl assume that since DOT 5.1 has a higher # it must therefore be better..This is simply not true. DOT 5.1 was formulated for use in ABS systems that require a less viscous fluid. From the information i was able to gather it seems that most road racers are now relying on the latest generation of DOT 4 brake fluid, along with regular fluid replacement, for the ultimate in hydraulic brake system perfomance. So we may conclude that DOT 5.1 is not an improvment, but a modification for ABS use. And it's permissable to mix DOT 3,4 and Dot 5.1 brake fluids, DOT 5 silicone fluid cannot be mixed with any other type. If the system is not completely purged before conversion, the mixture may gel and result in very poor braking.. Therefore conversion usually requires disassembly and a thorough cleaning, or at least numerous bleeding sessions over several days..Because DOT 5 cannot be mixed with any other brake fluid it has been given a special purple color..Any owner or machanic seeing the purple color should instantly recognize that the fluid in the reservoir is not normal brake fluid.. DOT 5 SBBF (Silicone Based Brake Fluid) and 5.1 is NSBF (Non-Silicone Based Fluid).. Something i thought would help.. |

It's was an FYI, I didn't know any of this about Diff. DOT numbers.. It did say the DOT 5 does have a higher boil rate, but Didn't say anything about the same for DOT 5.1..Is this true? Or not?
Bacause i don't know.. But i can mix 5.1 with ours..Don't we have DOT 4? |

I already said it and i say it again, synthetic DOT 5.1 is Way to go for you. Forget about DOT 4 when you're ready to hit a Race Track, even when you believe you won't use your Brakes much there.
The Amsoil Product looks not bad, but it's named and advertsise at DOT 4, even when they show it exceeds DOT 4 standards. I'm not familiar with the Fluids offered in US, but if you go with the usual Brands, you'll most likely won't be wrong. This other Product from UK says DOT 5.1+, sounds better, but getting this to US might not be cheap. I personally use Motul or Lucas Fluids in said Standards. Hopefully some others can chime in here and name some good Products with the Standards we need to have. |

Bacause i don't know.. But i can mix 5.1 with ours..Don't we have DOT 4? DOT 5 was named, when they all thought this would be the top of Line, nothing will get over this. Some say, it is silicone based because Harley Davidson wnated to have a Product which doesn't eat Paint, don't know if that true or not. But even Harley said good Bye to DOT 5 Fluid on new Bikes years ago. When Technology evolved, DOT 5.1 came up and was made the new top of the Line Standard. Unfortunately, they named it for whatever Reason 5.1 instead of DOT 6, which would have been the logical Choice. Nowadays, DOT 5.1 exceeds DOT 5 Specs in every technical Aspect, except it's still eating Paint and Plastics, but with the new synthetic Fluids, this bad Property is deminishing somewhat. Boiling Point, dry and wet are the Factors to look at. Mixing DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 is OK, but you shouldn't do that. It's like mixing a single Malt Whisky with Coke, it's ok to do so, but it's Kinda dumb mixing down the finest with under averaged Things ... With a single Malt, you'd go pure or forget it |

The higher the boiling point, like DOT 5.1, the more hygroscopic, water absorbing, it is and the more frequently it'll need to be changed. You'd probably be fine changing it every 1-2 years.
