TOPIC: Brake oil damage after 30.000 km maintenance
Brake oil damage after 30.000 km maintenance 1 year 3 weeks ago #1

Last week I brought the beast to the dealer for a 30.000 km maintenance and inspection.
When I returned home at the end of the day, I put the bike under a cover. After that the weather stayed bad for a couple of days, but finally I could ride the bike yesterday for the first time. After taking away the cover, I saw that it looked as if the right air scoop was partially covered with a piece of wrinkled tape. I cleaned the scoop and didn't pay any further attention to it. While I was riding, I saw, that the right brake oil container was leaking fluid. Shit! When I pulled over and inspected the bike, I saw now, that it was the sealing of the scoop, that was partially dissolved. Also the steer and black airfilter cover were damaged. I directly drove to the dealer and showed him what had happened. The mecanic, who had done the maintenance, showed me (after taking off the lid of the container) that the rubber hadn't closed tight. That caused the leaking problem. He never had experienced this before. So every time I used the front brake, the oil pushed out. The chief of the maintenance department told me, that he ordered a new scoop and a new rubber. Het doesn't know, that he has to order a new steer and airfilter cover as well. Perhaps this will help you as well in the future to prevent damage.

Tejo, i'm sorry to hear this, i hope they make their Error right at their own Expense.
I'd be interested in the damaged Scoop if this would come available. I'm working on a Project and already got a damaged left Scoop for a decent Price. |

I just bled my clutch. As always, I went overboard with covering parts. I've seen what brake fluid can do to clear coat, paint and powder coating. Thanks for posting. It's a good reminder for all.

Tejo, that's too bad. Inspect your bike really really well!!!
And get every piece that's damaged replaced! |

Almost everyone use Siliconized brake fluid it will not damage paint , I am pretty sure at least the American bikes are shipped with
Dot 4 silicon brake fluid when I changed my lines to braided I flushed and put in all new fluid , I suspect they used old Dot 3 fluid Yamaha calls for Dot 4 that only comes in silicon , I would ask to see the container cause if they used dot 3 it is a Caustic and could really damage your brake system , they should flush you'd entire system and replace with a non caustic Silicon dot 4 Dot 4 will not damage paint it has about the same effect as motor oil. |

I thought that DOT 3 and DOT 4 are petroleum based and DOT 5 is silicon based. Goes to show that you learn something everyday. |

Folks, i don't what to start a Discussion about Brake Fluids here, but DOT 3, 4, 5.1 will eat Paint. Those are all glycol-esther based Fluids.
DOT 5 is the only silicone based Fuid and doesn't eat Paint, but it can eat Seals of glycol-esther based Brake Parts, like Seals in the Master Cylinder and in the Calipers. Please, DO NOT USE DOT 5 Brake Fluid inour Bike. Use DOT 5.1 and be a safe and happy Camper. |
