TOPIC: Issue with fender extender

Issue with fender extender 1 year 1 week ago #1

Has anyone else that has installed the front fender extender had problems with it snagging the lower radiator shroud? I am on my second shroud now after just figuring out how it's getting broken. Happened on my very first ride and noticed one of the plastic slots busted and thought maybe a rock got it or something so I replaced it. Today with the new one installed I actually heard it going out my driveway when hitting the rain gutter and when the suspension compresses enough it snags the plastic and breaks it. Now I have two broken shrouds, 40 bucks a pop I need to either trim it or remove it all together.

Put mine on my 09 3 seasons ago and never a problem. I am 250 plus, so I would think I have compressed the suspension enough to do what you did, unless you have quite a drop-off leaving your driveway. Any chance it was not on correctly?

Phil maybe you need to recess it another 1/2 inch or so I have the Magical fender but it has never rubbed
Suspension will compress more with weight as well you are a big guy so maybe now that it is mounted
A trim job sounds in order , watching the Oz fender cam video you really see the travel on the forks

Although I don't doubt what you are saying is happening since only you have a first hand visual of the extender and radiator cover...but perhaps you need to push down on the forks in various angular positions from all the way left, to all the way right as you have someone else look to see when and how, the rubbing is occurring...

I have had the extender on all three of my GEN2s, two of which had the fork tubes pushed up 33mm from stock since I installed a 2" lowering link and I have never had any problems...

One thing I did was take a "cable tie" and wrapped it around one fork, set it at about halfway on the fork tube between the plates of the triple tree and rode around with it for weeks, checking to see how far the forks compressed...the cable tie was at worse, one inch from full compression...of course, this all depends on rider weight, fork settings and riding conditions...

Hope you figure it out...

It snags the plastic rung 3rd & 4th from the bottom when i hit that gutter going in or out of the driveway. Turing to the right going out of the driveway or left coming in it snapped a total of 4 rungs (both to the RH and Lf of the center vertical rung) on the first shroud and just one so far on the new shroud.
I think the problem is I'm in a turn either going in or out of the driveway when i hit that bump and the corner of the extender snags it, i hit the bump slow too as my lower back is not the best. I am about 250 with all my gear on and i have lowered the forks 3/4" in the tree so maybe bringing the front back up will solve the problem. I installed the extender with the tape edge all the way inside the fender so it shouldn't be too low. I trimmed the old shroud with the 4 broken rungs and it looks fine so maybe ill just put it back on now that it has been "properly clearnced"

You can see the marks on the extender on both RH & LF sides, i guess its a combo of my forks being lowered and my fat butt with a big bump while in a turn.

I can see where that could happen... :weight: ...lol...

Bringing the forks back down to OEM, may resolve the problem but...if you lowered the rear end, you may not want to do that...

I guess you have tried to stiffen up the compression setting on the front end, one notch at a time, as you turn the front end fully to the left or right, hold the brake down and push down on the front end as you have someone look to see how close the extender gets to the radiator cover...

I don't think you are looking at much of a hit by the extender when it does happen...probably in the order of 1/4" or less, but just enough to snag that plastic cover and break the "rungs" as you call them...

Here's some pictures...just so we all understand what you are talking about...did I get it right???...

Wow Art, but yes absolutely right. The two missing in your picture (RH & LF of center) were broke one at a time and then the two below on my original shroud. I trimmed the left over plastic so the shroud looks fine other than missing the two rows and the center divider is intact. My new shroud i actually heard it "pop" when i was turning out of the drive way yesterday to the right busting the left side rung.
Now that i no whats going on i can either put on the windowed shroud as it has clearanced its self and stiffen up the forks or trim the protector some. I lowered the rear 1 inch so would like to keep the forks where there at. I just find it kinda odd that of all the extenders being used with all the different setups and rider weights that my setup is the only one to do this.

EDIT- Just to say that i have no issues with the extender itself and will continue to run it, its a good upgrade so nothing against Darren's product. My scenario is just such that it hits just slightly.

I think what it is, is that most owners do not have their bikes lowered...I don't know what the percentages are but I would venture to say that, the ones that are lowered are FAR less than the ones that are OEM height...

Plus...I don't know if you got the "internal memo" stating that, "All members are required to participate in the Jenny Craig program until further notice"...lol...

I think there, the percentages are the opposite, where the majority of owners are in the 171-249 lbs...me being 170 and you being 250...

It can't be the  or the :chips: because I love both... :rotflmao:

Back on the issue...if you decide to keep the rungs cut out of there...maybe you should take some foam protective material and place it between the radiator and the inside of the cover so that it will at least absorb any rocks that may fly up into that open area...
