TOPIC: Starter bolt

Starter bolt 11 months 1 week ago #1

Ashes to ashes...dust to dust......and I guess starter bolts turn to rust!

Never seen rain and it's been a good garage queen!

Year 2009....4000 miles.

Upper starter body bolt has a nice shade of orangish brown......I think it acting out cause it didn't get the lovin as the rest of the bike...oh well!

Less then two dollars to order a factory replacement and it looks as if I can get to it without removing the starter.

Lower bolt a little corrosion but no rust.

SO.....here's the question.......has anyone preserved their bike yet to reduce corrosion?

What I mean is sprayed something to avoid oxidation of metal parts?

I'm thinking maybe S100 to clean first then spray with something to keep this from happening again.

Maybe it was just a bad finish on the bolt.....I don't know.....but I don't want to be replacing it again!

How did you discover this Ken? Did you have issues with the starter? Got 23K on mine and all is still good!

Bolt doesn't need to be changed. That little bit of surface rust isn't pretty but it isn't hurting or weakening the bolt. WD-40 works wonders at stopping rust. Just spray it & forget it. You're the only one who knows it's there..

I think I found it the first time while cleaning it and had wiped it off....this time it was starting to scale...nothing wrong with the starter.

I thought about just cleaning it off and coating it with something.....CorrosionX....WD40...etc....but since the bolt is less than 2 bucks (already ordered) I'll probably paint the new one and replace it.

The bolts hold the starter motor end caps on........think I'll have any issue with seals at each end if I just loosen the one bolt and replace it?

Ken,
I just checked mine. No rust. My bike has been ridden year round in Seattle for well over three years.
