TOPIC: Light Blue Smoke from CANS
Light Blue Smoke from CANS 11 months 1 week ago #1

I went on a 10 day jetski trip with the family. Just came home today, so I was in need of some serious fun. I started MAX, and noticed a good amount of light blue smoke from both cans. I would say, about a good 3 seconds. First time seeing this. Any concerns??? Only 12,000 miles

Did you notice of it smelled like oil or gas? Sometimes when I start mine it will smoke for a couple of seconds but you can smell its definitely gas.

Mine doesn't smoke. Even if it did, not much I could do about it, until it gets bad.
Light blue smoke is usually oil. Black smoke is gas. White smoke is water (condensation or possibly coolant). I've had a couple of cars where the injectors leak off pressure (gas) into a cylinder. Black smoke at start up, after sitting between 15 minutes to an hour, results in a black puff of smoke and 2-3 seconds of slightly rough idle is the key indicator. Let us know if it smokes again. Mike. |

If you have a Paddock stand check your oil to see if it's above the sight glass , I had that happen to my buddys he was puffing blue on start up we both have the OTEC cases and his always looked higher in oil level on the side stand the dealer changed his and pulled the spec off the Yamaha tech service page and it was off by almost a full quart I found this out at the parts counts when i asked for oil for my bike and the guy put 6 quarts on the counter I did a WTF and he showed me on the screen it was wrong i went home and checked my service and owners manual to see for sure. I dumped Oil to get the level at 3/4 in the glass .
Just a Thought. |

While wife, family were unpacking all the crap from our trip, I started MAX, to make some noise, just on idle. Oil level was fine, when I checked it. Didn't trust the dealer. To my memory, never have started MAX, when on stand. SO, I need to do some more checking, on the oil level. THANKS!!!!!! |

Thinking about mine now it smokes white. Sometimes when I start it I get sprayed with water if I walk by the exhaust. Also when this happens I get a strong cotton candy odor for a couple of seconds. I run fuel fragrance, the grandkids love it!
Good to know about the oil level. |

After my engine sat upside down for 3 months, I smoked up my whole neighborhood when she first fired up. The service manual is a little misleading with the oil capacity. I had to re-read it a couple of times to make sure I got it right. Engine oil quantity Total amount 5.90 L (6.24 US qt, 5.19 Imp.qt) Without oil filter cartridge replacement 4.30 L (4.55 US qt, 3.78 Imp.qt) With oil filter cartridge replacement 4.70 L (4.97 US qt, 4.14 Imp.qt) The 4.97 US qt is the right amount...basically 5 qts is perfect. I did a double take on the 6.24 qt thing at first. |

Thanks Grover I would think easy for a Tech or the parts guy to interpit that total oil to needed oil factor.
Thats exactly what happend to Rick when he had his bike serviced . |

Oil level was correct, from lookn at the window. I let MAX sit, for 24 hrs, then started her up again, this time, not on the rear stand, no smoke. I had to trailer MAX down, for the clutch install. When I picked her up, drove her down the block, then back on the trailer. When I got home, put MAX on the rear stand, for a quick cleaning, left MAX on stand for close to 10 days or so. Would leaving MAX on the rear stand, for that time period, have anything to do with it?? I wouldn't think so, but could be wrong!!
