TOPIC: clunking noise in 1st gear stop n go traffic

clunking noise in 1st gear stop n go traffic 1 year 1 day ago #1

I have been noticing a clunking noise in 1st/2nd gear in stop n go traffic. It is when I am doing about 2,000 rpm and get on and off the gas. It sounds like it's coming from the drive shaft but it's hard to tell. It does not happen any other time. The bike only has 600 miles on it. If you have any ideas besides don't go slow in 1st or 2nd gear please let me know.

Try to get all of the slack out of your throttle cable if you can....a stock bike is quite "twitchy" at small throttle openings and a cable with play in it will make it worse.

I'd be concerned if it is happening when you have steady acceleration but not if you are just at that sweet spot where the bike is holding a very slow constant speed.
If it is clunking/clacking/chunking during steady acceleration, then it might be something similar to my issue where I had some teeth chewed up in the tranny.
If it is just doing a little herky/jerky sort of thing when you are holding a very slow steady speed, then that is nothing. There is a little bit of built in slop in the middle drive gear and shaft.

Thanks. I feel better now  I knew I could count on you guys. I did eliminate most of the throttle play but will try to tighten it up more. I think Max just doesn't like going slow

Certainly understand your concern db.....the Max is an animal and animals make noises!

You get your break-in done and start "tweaking" that beast and it will roar.....you won't be disappointed! B)

Just did the 600 mile service today but did not get to go for a ride yet. Can't wait to see what the beast has got. My 6 year old son goes to a catholic school and he told me the bikes name should be the Gospel Beast because it is a good beast. Smart Kid!

Hmmmmm... :hmmm: ..I have 2012, a few months old, about 1800 miles on the clock....never really noticed the clunking you described. OTOH, first thing I do when I buy a new bike (as Itgoes mentioned) is to take as much of the slack out of the throttle as I can. 'Course, I might not notice a "clack" (shorthair's description) type of sound......ever own a Roadliner?
