TOPIC: Removing the rear weel on a '09 Vmax

Removing the rear weel on a '09 Vmax 11 months 17 hours ago #1

I was in the process of taking the back wheel off my '09 max. I started by lossening the two bolts on the right side and then began to try and lossen the axle. I didnt want to apply too much torque before I made sure I am doing it right. I dont have a manual and cant find any instructions online so here I am asking if anyone can provide some directions. It looks simple but it sure seems like I was applying quite a bit of torque to loosen that axle with no luck. I guess I will try again and apply more torque if I am doing it right. It appears nothing nneds to be messed with on the drive shaft side of the bike to remove the axle...is that right? any help would be appreciated.

That's correct, nothing on the driveshaft side, but you'll need an hexagon axle tool to fit in the axle and a lot of torque to turn it counter clockwise. Once they've been loosened once, you won't have this issue again. I believe they use locktite when they assemble.

Rise the rear of the Bike,

open two Pinch Bolts on the right Side Swing Arm

loosen Axle

undo ABS-Sensor and Wire Holder Bolt

carefully tuck away ABS-Sensor

undo both Bolts on the Caliper

pull Caliper off the Bracker

take the Pads out

undo Axle

take Washer, Caliper Bracket and the ABS-Sensor Housing out

put Axle in and give it one Turn

slide the Rim towards the right Side of the Bike

pull Axle

take Rim carefully out

I never took the rear pads out to change tires. I just left them in the caliper and carefully dropped the assembly back onto the rotor.

+1 to what Bob said. I never took my brake pads out either.

The axle bolt is REALLY tight though. I was very worried that it was left handed thread before it finally broke loose.
