TOPIC: Those stock mufflers sound pretty good

Re:Those stock mufflers sound pretty good 2 years, 2 months ago #21

Knock out the baffle and it will sound A LOT better! Buy/make a 15" chisel about 1/2" diameter, stick it down the exhaust opening of each muffler, and knock out the baffle located about midway down the muffler. I used a piece of rebar. The muffler doesn't even have to be removed. The stock mounting is strong enough to handle it. You'll have to whack it several times and then peer down the tube with a flashlight to see you've removed it all. It's not thin metal, so don't be timid. Sounds like a NASCAR engine and not extreamly loud; just satisfying. I've never been stopped for excessive noise.

Thats certainly one way of doing it. HeHe - Very cost effective!

We should do that during one of our Monster Garages, film it and post it up, as the first exhaust mod!

Have been thinking of simply cuting open the exhaust cannister under the bike, gutting it and welding it back together, repplacing it with a 4-2-1-2 piece, leaving the header pipes as is. Kind of similar to what the offered for the R1 (cat-eliminator) - I know the green guys will freak out, but its one way to get more power AND better sound.

What happens with the baffle you knock out? where does it go or how do you get it out?

Re:Those stock mufflers sound pretty good 2 years ago #24

Actually I think you're just knocking it out of the way. I believe it's a tab that covers the exhaust port partially to limit sound. You're bascially just bending it out of the way and eliminating the obstruction.

Looks like someone found an old post I made several years ago in a V-Max club newsletter...........

The part to be removed is a disc located midway down each muffler. It's purpose is to force exhaust gasses to take a longer path to the outside world by making it go around the disc and through the outside part of the muffler. Removing the disc just gives it a straight-out pathway. In effect, it simply reduces the effect of the mufflers and you still have all the remaining plumbing to keep it relatively quiet.

The disc gets cut into pie sections and bent forward, almost totally opening the pathway. You can eaisly see it with a flashlight to tell when you're finished.

Actually no, I didn't see your post. Someone here had asked about the new Vmax exhaust and i found a video where you could see down the muffler, and it was discussed what to do to remove those obstructions.

I'm glad it survived this long and maybe helped a few people. It's an exact quotation from the VMOA publication "V-Boost" from about 1998. Anyway, you can't beat the price and the sound is delicious.

I'm satisfied with the stock sound of the new Vmax that we heard in Germany.

I've been riding with Doma exhausts on my Vmax for 5 years now. It's extremely loud. With a stock exhaust I could always hear the intake howl of the bike, but with the Doma's that sound disappeared completely.

I don't know if I'll like that much noise for the new bike.

You can go faster with quieter pipes! (Without as many tickets) But, how long will we be satisfied with the stock sound? Six months, a year? If we were the type to be happy with what we have we'd never be spending 20K for a new monster bike. Ain't life great!
