TOPIC: front end lowering

front end lowering 3 years 7 months ago #1

I have the UFO drag link but want to lower my front end also. Looking for comments on what is best. Do I slide the fork tubes up in the triple clamps or is it better to use shorter fork springs? Also remmeber reading something about shortening the shims inside the forks.

Quickest and easiest way without changing suspension characteristics is to slide the fork tubes up through the tripple tree. It may change your steering geometry slightly but most people will not notice the difference.

Keep in mind the that the lower you make the bike the sooner it will hit the pegs in turns. By a substantial degree.

But... I lowered my front on my legend 1 inch by slipping the tubes up in the triple clamps and I LOVE the feel and handling. And I scraped before and still after but it was worth it.

Be aware that if you decide to slide the forks up through the triple clamps not go too far. Check to make sure that the front tire does not come into contact with the radiator on full compression of the front suspension. There have been other members on the forum that have already done this and warned me about the same thing. It is my understanding that you can slide the fork up trough the triple clamps about 3/4 inch maybe an 1 inch but anymore the tire may come into contact with the plastic radiator grill under full compression!
Hope this helps :)

I've lowered my forks by 5mm, no problems what so ever.

Thanks. I know about less corning clearance but don't care as I am not a corner carver. I read in another thread that 3/4 inch was the maximum before the tire will get to close the the rad over bumps and such. Anyone lowered the front more than an inch by some other way?

If you've installed the rear lowering link you can not safely lower the front without replacing or modifying the sidestand. The bike will not have enough lean to keep from falling over to the right. UFO does make an adjustable sidestand.

I have the Y-Gear rear shock and shorter side stand. Slid the front tubes up by a little less than 1" - seems to work very well.

I will be installing the Y-Gear springs up front. The are progressive and while the lower the bike by 1" the become progressively stiffer, to not bottom out.

Thanks Fxstein. Where can I order Y-gear front springs?
