TOPIC: another exhaust question

another exhaust question 1 year, 10 months ago #1

Here's my dilemma...I am about ready to sell the Vmax 'cause I can't get satisfied with the exhaust note. As good as the bike runs; I can't get exhaust satisfaction.
As stupid as that sounds, I have owned several Ducatis and can't understand why I can't get this 1700 cc beast to growl like a good ole Italian (1000 cc) L twin. I know we are talking apples and oranges, engine stroke, etc. etc.
Here's the question for all of you that have ran the UFO mid pipe and then a Mikes xpipe and/or the Akro mid pipe:
With the same mufflers, is there a difference in the way the x pipe and/or Akro mid pipes make the bike sound (compared to the UFO mid) and again using the same mufflers.
I am running the UFO cat eliminator with FMF Hayabusa slip-ons,(similar to the Scorpions and every other glasss pack type slip-on mufflers) and have tried different opening sizes and configurations. I can get loud but still cannot get a good, deep growl...I am wondering (for all of you with the Akros) if the good sound is coming from the different mid pipe configuration or the mufflers.
Thanks,
Scott

There is no growl . It`s a V4 . It just humms. There always a cylinder firing . Run it with no mufflers . You`ll have a pro stock sound . Sorry best I can do .

Even with this setup there no growl till you hammer it . Then all the sound is in back of you .

I second that you will not get a twin boom from a v4 rage put megaphones on the pipe about the loudest it will get. Try riding a single 640 with full Akro just got 1 talk about thumper and noise from 1 big piston.
How long are the Hayabusa canisters you are using length will make a diference tried removing the packing all things to change sound if your still playing. My Scorpions are 14" good luck Ty

Mikes Xpipe with no mufflers produces an awesome dragster sound that's not that loud, but adding a pair of these will also produce some pleasing ear candy

All of the pipes listed have their own sound, should have a new clip up in a couple weeks.

Not sure how you define growl, but the Akrapovic setup (both mid pipe and mufflers) sounds very deep at idle and when the bike is fully warmed up it has that V8-ish loping sound - to die for. Absolutely love it.

WHen you get on it the Big Air does the rest.

Hey, I know how you feel.....the way a bike sounds is important to me too. Love a Ducati with a pipe, there is a lot of sportbike traffic near my house when the weather is good, - I can identify a Ducati from a mile away.
Now the VMax, I've owned 4, (for the uniqueness,AND the sound) really sounds like nothing else...with the right exhaust. I actually think they did a pretty good job from the factory, although any factory exhaust is to quiet for my liking.
Now my 09' does not sound like Ducati, but that's OK with me cause I think it sounds better (and so does everyone else that hears it in person)!
You need to experiment, and hopefully get to hear some bikes with mods in person to see what you like. The mid-pipes do change the sound more than you would think, so a different mid-pipe may be in your future.

What did this Mark guy do to the stock cans? Did he just take the baffles and Y pipe like B_M demonstrated last year?

Yes and in addition also removed the "stub" outlets, and opened up the holes.
