TOPIC: VIN Numbers and production problems

As has been mentioned, let's see if we can pin some of the more common problems down to a certain batch of 09 Vmaxes based on the last 4 of the VIN, which should correlate to the approximate order they were made. This should show whether there is a bad batch of them, or if the problems are simply random, or perhaps mileage related (although this does not seem likely). Also, their should be none over 2500, if our production totals for 2009 are correct. If we get a bunch of responses, I would be happy to put them in a chart to make them easier to compare. So, to start it off:
0299 3,900 miles, no issues of any kind. |

0546 / 10k miles and throttle cable ran out of adjustment. Seems Yamaha could have used a cable about 10mm shorter in relation to the sleve. It was almost out of adjustment when new. I've added small, thick washers as shims down under the airbox to buy me some time on replacing the cable.
No other problems. Very pleased overall. |

I'll pm later on what exactly you did for a temp cure. I need to ride my bike to work to get a measurement and thread size of the cable adjustment. Thinking of making a short extention. I think I have 480 but would have to ck again. I had 1758 on the order. Have the link and FX speedo fix. Seems the kill switch is touchy. I have flipped it off before, to insure it worked. It took a half dozen flips back to the on position before the engine would crank. When playing with the throttle adjustment recently, I must of 'aggravated' the switch somehow. It took three flips of the switch, off to on, before the engine turned over. |

I also had the kill switch issue occasionally, but never tried flipping it back & forth numerous times. I would just walk away for 15 to 20 min. (sometimes more) and the next time I tried to start it, it fired right up. I verified it's not a switch issue by rdiing down the road & flipping it off & on and it worked everytime. Seems to be a condition it causes in the ECU that prevents the bike from even turning over..

0828 with 69,555 miles. Failed starter solenoid switch (failed in the closed position) which made for an interesting scramble to disconnect the battery before the bike burned to the ground..
