TOPIC: Handling Question on lowering kit

Handling Question on lowering kit 3 months, 3 weeks ago #1

Hi Guys, If you have read any of my previous posts I am taking delivery on my 09 highly modified Max on or around the 25 th of this month question the former owner has installed the lowering kit and I am curious how much of the cornering it takes away as far as the lean factor the max has a 240 rear as well I am a tall just shy of 6 3 and used to a bike that handles like it's on rails with buku ground clearance am I going to wanting to reinstall the factory
one or is there enough to sastify an accomplished rider ,I am not a knee dragger by any means but dont want the Harley scrape on turns either and if I do reinstall the factory one is it a battle and do you need anything more than a standard rear wheel lift, I would assume the lowerkit's purpose is for short people or looking low on cruise night , Another question is the carbon fiber porrus finish or more of a polished finish reason being if I ride this bike back from alabama it's love bug season here in florida and dont want to screw this shiny new to me bike up it has the complete carbon kit
including for lowers , I apoligise for all the questions but I an trying to get a battle plan on this Thanks Capt Bob

I have not ridden a lowered VMax but I lowered the triple tree over an inch for a while because I was wheelie-ing at the drags. I did notice it on the first couple of hard turns that I was scraping the pegs easier. I did also scrape the pegs with the bike at the correct height but only when really going hard. Certainly at your height you don't need the bike lowered (unless you like it way it looks), and you'll probably like riding it at the stock height better. Of course FX's bike is lowered, and it dosen't seem to be slowing him down any!

I lowered mine about a couple months ago. I have the link and dropped the front an inch. I don't do corners so I couldn't help with that. Have had too many guys in my 'work area' kick the bucket taking the curves around here. Just getting after it and in line driving, I have no problems. I feel I need to tighten the rear tension a bit. Feels a bit soft now when I get on it. I only have it set at about 20% tension. The bike plane does set at a small angle, towards the rear.

Bob,
first, take a look at the following thread:
Akrapovic Mufflers with "X-Pipe" where I had done a exhaust sound recording...

Take a look at my CF parts...it does SHINE, just like the well waxed OEM parts do, if not more so...that takes care of your first question...

Now, on the BUGS possibly damaging your shiny CF body parts...I doubt it...those Yamaha CF Body parts are pretty tough and I don't think you have to worry about that...if nothing else, put 3-4 coats of hard wax on everything before you leave the place you are buying it at...don't buff it...leave the wax on there real thick until you it her home...

Now, on the Lowering...I am assuming that the bike that you are buying has the lowering link and NOT the air suspension...

Ok...I too have the lowering link and have pushed the forks up 38 mm from stock and have all of the settings (compression, rebound, pre-load) at around 60% towards the SOFTER side since I only weigh 170 lbs...

Moving on...I do not hot-dog it around the corners like I use to in my younger years but have leaned it to some corners, lets say, fairly hard and have not hit anything yet...

The only problem that I have had is, because I have always left my shifting foot UNDER the shift lever once I am out of 1st...even if I am in 5th...and only bring my foot around and up when I am going to do a down-shift...

That is just the way I ride and I DO ride pretty hard, that's FAST that is...

Anyway, on some relatively flat left hand curves and on-ramps to freeways that are flat but curve to the left onto the freeway, my toe has hit the ground and a few times, tried to go down and under...scaring the crap out of me...

I have now learned to pull my foot around and over on those left hand curves...

I am assuming that your main concern has to do with getting the bike home and not once you are home...

The reason I say that is, if I were 6 ft 3 ins...I would have left the OEM link in there because the bike runs just fine in the OEM configuration and there are very few problems around any corners or curves...but at 5 ft 7 ins...I wanted that BOTH FEET ON THE GROUND "fuzzy" feeling, especially in graveled or sandy areas and the occasional reverse bank situations...

The bike in my opinion rides really well with the lowering link and is stable for ME...

But if you are that tall, I am thinking that you weight a bit more than I do and so, there will be different suspension settings that you will need to have (Stiffer), IF you are to keep that lowering link setup...

Well...I hope that you have been able to take some of my comments and are able to make more of a informed decision of what you want to do...

Capt Bob, a trick to remove all the BUGS really fast: soak the bike parts with the 'corpses' really good with water. Let it stand soaking wet for a bit. Take a wet cloth and almost all the 'corpses' will be off in no time at all! As already mentioned, it helps if your bike is nicely covered in wax.

Good luck on your trip.
