What do you think ? If Yamaha had built the Gen 2 with all the Mod's everyone has been doing--X-Pipe,Slip on's,PCV,and Big Air and it came from the factory that way ? Assuming they all put 200HP + to the ground. What would the original advertisements state ? Instead of 197hps/123ft.lbs.---What would it have read ? Inquiring Minds Want To Know ? Any Guesses ? Down under, Max was advertised as a 200HP machine(Metric conversion of 197).I always thought that's what it put out at the crank and I assumed 15% loss at the wheel, which turned out about right
But Now that some members have broken the 200HP mark, it must mean that the Max makes more like 230HP at the crank if not more. Mine makes around 190 with the wide wheel and that's plenty to keep me on my toes. |

Lets say stock is 197 hps at the crank. That is about 174 hps (SAE) at the wheel.
The 'loss' is about 12% If you get 197 hps (SAE) at the wheel and you add 12% to get approximate crank numbers you end up at 223 hps. So your bike the way it is modded an tuned would most likely be labeled at 223hps crank by a manufacturer. This is a very basic approximation, but probably pretty close. |

Nice photos Bad_Max....I don't think I saw that one of the engine before. As far as the other one....when I spoke to the Yamaha Engineers/Executives about the new design, I told them I liked everything about it except the rear fender/seat design. Then I pulled this photo up on my laptop....they laughed pretty good.

I think the current engine is in a pretty mild state of tune. It only has 11.3:1 compression ratio while equivalent sport bike engines are reaching close to 13:1. The redline is only 9500 RPM while sport bike engines are pushing 14,000 RPM.
I think that there are several reasons the bike was "detuned" to 200HP. One is heat dissipation. The current radiators are already using a lot of space. Fuel economy is another. With only a 4 gallon tank, range is already marginal. Emissions may be another reason. I have no doubt that Yamaha could easily get 250 BHP out of the current engine with minor modifications. Maybe a future model upgrade. |

"250 BHP?" That will probably be the 2012 version.
2012 Full Power Gen2 Vmax... Kinda has a nice ring to it. |
