TOPIC: Front forks leaking

Re: Front forks leaking 1 year 3 weeks ago #21

:hmmm: After going for a short ride after work today, I noticed my fork did not need a tissue to wipe it off (...no, all the oil did not leak out lol). So that's it...MAX healed himself. :focus:

Good for you, but you really should check the Oil Level in the Fork Legs and equal them out.

According to the Shop Manual, it should be at 104 mm with the Spring removed and the Fork Leg completely collapsed.
Great idea Squeeze...will do. It did lose a good bit of fork oil.

Before you're buttoning everything back up, clean and regrease the Head Bearings. Yamaha is notoriously known for using not too much Grease there. It's an important Part of your Chassis, can't do too much Maintanance there.

Once the Bearing is adjusted, line everything up from bottom towards top, using only light Torque at the Bolts.

Then start tightening down everything down with the respective Torque at the Axle and work your Way up to upper Fork Yoke. Check the front for binding or normal Travel by pushing the front of the Bike into a Stop, a Wall or something similar.

Also just to let you know the stuff that fouled my seal came from the inside. That's why I decided to do both of them. It's really a very easy job that takes about 30 min once the front tire is off.

Rafter, will house-hold mechanics tools do the job? I thought special tools were needed.

quote="maxbusa" post=159545]I just purchased a 09 max a few weeks ago and after a couple of rides noticed the left fork seal was leaking badly. The bike had only 2500 miles so I was not a happy camper. It was leaking so bad it was running down the lower fork tube. After the initial fury wore off I thought I would try the seal saver...a very thin plastic tool used for cleaning out the seals on my dirt bikes forks...it is called a seal saver made by motionpro.com. I am happy to report that after a spirited ride today...lots of heavy braking and accelerating ....not a drop. So now I can begin my mods :punk: So before you guys start tearing apart your forks....give this thing a try...it cost about five bucks and worked on my dirt bikes 90%of the time.[/quote]

+1
Whats with this front right fork?? I had the same issue and fortunately mentioned it to a friend that just happened to have a spare seal mate tool he'd been given at a dirt bike event.
Slipped that baby in there and 1,000+ miles later, its the proverbial ducks butt!. Well worth trying first.

Re: Front forks leaking 4 months 3 weeks ago #30

Well I think I am having the same issue on the front Right fork like a few members here had. What you all think?

Not sure what the leak looks like or what I am meant to be looking for as there are no drops of oil or anything like that running down the fork or the seal, but there is a residue left on fork compression.
Below is the pic. Its very minor, but bothers me none the less

I have the seal mate on the way and will give that a try first as I am not sure if this is a DIY if you have pull the forks out to replace the seals. Any advice is appreciated here.

Thanks
