With all do respect....not trying to be a jerk but, did the same dealer that did your fork seals install your clutch? Because if I remember right that didn't go so well.

Historically going way back with Gen 1's, very, very few dealers have mechanics that have the right experience to work on these bikes.

Just keep that in mind, we all know what a seemingly "simple" repair (oil pump) can turn into.

You need to compare the feel of the clutch with another Max if you can....and have that owner check out yours as well.

A good set of levers with the leverage bend like AGV or Pazzo or the Knock offs offer more of the adjustment you are looking for much greater than the factory i really learned that experimenting with a Barnett clutch that being said
the double d mod is really a must do about 60 bucks and very minimal tools if i were you just do this one yourself
Ricks little guide is nice but not a deal breaker everyone used double before he came out with it if you have time to get it from him it's money well spent 35 bucks i think thats right when ordering the new spring there is upgraded bolts for the spring retainer ring just grade 8 bolts yamaha or lowes dont matter easy mod takes 1/2 hour tops

If you suspect it's slipping get in 4 th gear at crusing speed and roll on hard and steady if it's gonna slip you would know it then Mark is 100 % correct this is a unique slipper clutch with it's own feel the DD mods pretty much double your clutch life and the upgraded levers add some travel adjustment plus look great too.

How many miles on the clock?

Randy is that your special purpose lol

It could be a possibility. Your clutch pack should be thicker with the new plates. Since the pack is thicker, grab should take place sooner as you let out the clutch. If a plate was left out then the pack won't be as thick and your grab will take place later as you let out the clutch.

I agree with you that the clutch engagement is way too far out.
I don't have a big mitt, and i found it almost dangerous having the engage happen when my hand was at full stretch with minimal grip.
My fix was to put a piece of tube over it, heat it up with a torch about where the 1st finger would be, and bend the crap out of it!
I did it on the bike and was probably lucky it didn't snap (as they do).
Probably the safe way would be to take it off, and configure it in a vise. That way you can use the vice to "feel" the heat working on the aluminum and not over-stress and risk snapping it.
Remember that aluminum disperses heat quickly so you'll need some good quick heat.
Certainly hasn't caused any problems. 30,000 smiles later and still on the original clutch.

Hope this helps!! KP

Thank you Guys for all your help !! I have 17,000 miles on the Max and I think I'll do the Double D spring mod . The Dealership that did the forks also did the clutch at the time they did it they told me they had a hell of a time getting the right height so I know they did it right they assured me that ! This are the same people that stood behind me with the forks after all they did it for FREE !!!!!!
