TOPIC: Whistle noise from crankcase!

Ebi, have someone sit on the Max upright. You keep your eye on the oil sight glass. Start the Max up while watching the sight glass, if the oil drops in the sight glass, the oil pump is working. If it does't drop, have it trailered back to the dealership ASAP! I see the oil level drops after the engin starts, and then I see oil dripping in. Is this good? |

Don't rely on the glass thing, if the pump is damage the oil will go down in the glass just the same because oil will go up from the timing chain but you won't get the pressure in every parts of the engine.

By chance, did you switch to a full synthetic oil?
I use Mobil 1 exclusively but in the industrial world, synthetics are notorious for allowing gear mesh (especially ones helical cut) to generate more noise. That being said, its nothing to chance. I would have the dealer look it over as well as check the oil pressure. |

I would have the dealer look it over as well as check the oil pressure. I used Yamalube, and change the oil myself about 3000 KM ago! this noise cones and goes. Last time I started the Max, there was no noise. I didn't think it was serious, but will have it checked. I think I have extended warranty on the bike anyways. |

I also get a whine from the clutch cover when I start my engine on cold days. It stops as soon as the engine warms up a little. I have inspected the pump and it is ok. I'm guessing its a clutch noise. Anyway I don't hear it anymore now with the brocks installed. I'm assuming you have stock exhaust.
If your oil drops to the bottom of the sight glass at an idle the pump is doing it's job! |

Noticed it too on my bike on cold engine starts when i went back to the stock exhaust.A couple of minutes into it no more whine.Don't hear it anymore though when i switched back to the V&H exhaust.Oil pressure normal at idle around 40psi when cold and gradually drops as it warms up

Update: I had this checked by a dealer and they said this winning noise is common in many Yamaha models, and related to the clutch not the oil pump. He didn't think it was necessary to open MAX up and inspect further on a urgent basis.
