TOPIC: K&P life long Oil filter

Re: K&P life long Oil filter 11 months 1 week ago #41

I like the fact that the Oil filter has a high power magnet built into it and coupled with the magnet on the drain plug that
picks up what is most harmful to engines metal shavings and particles from the transmission , I ride a lot of miles and use good Ester based
oils and change 4-5 K and seeing those small particles on that magnet is a plus , and I take my time cleaning the filter I feel it's more than adequate
the guy doing the review changes his oil at 8 K intervals dont know why you would wait so long to change maybe he's just Cheap.

With this filter you can keep oil on hand and not worry about filters so frequency can picked up as well I would feel that would be a + .

I run a similar take apart filter on my race car motor from a company called System 1. It flows more oil and its filtering characteristics takes out more junk than anything you can buy off the shelf. For a race motor its a must as i take it apart after every 10 or so passes and i can see if anything bad is starting to happen inside. After every 10 passes its cleaned and filled with 1qt of new oil and then at 40 passes the oil is changed out. I may look in to one of these for the bike once i get enough miles on it to make the change to a good synthetic.

These filters flow more oil, but they flow more junk also.
How many Super Tech 7317 filters can you get from Wally World for the same $?
Enough to last me the rest of my life.
It's your bike but all that money to shorten the life of your $5000 emgine is not a good investment in my book.

I know that being a former Navy man, we used the same type of filter media in these:

Usually, if it was good enough for that bird, it was good enough for me.

Q turned me on to these and I try to study the products I carry on my website to make sure they at least perform better than the OEM counterpart. After doing the homework, I like this filter for a couple of reasons:

1. I always cut open my old filter to see what is in there. This filter makes it a much simpler process. I usually have a magnet on hand to pull the debris from the paper element, which leads me to:
2. It has a pre-filtration magnet built into it. A very important feature that was missed / passed over by the "Filter Guru" in his rather intelligent review. I think the V-Max cylinders are treated with a Nikasil coating to make the surface nearly as hard as chromed glass. As a result of this process, typically there will be very little particulates (aluminum) worn off the cylinder wall. This means other engine components such as the crank, rings, gears, bearings, transmission and the valve train will be the main concern for oil borne particulates from wear. Since most of the components prone to wear are made of some form of steel, I like this magnet idea even more. Moreover, this magnet catches iron/steel particles regardless of it's micronic size. Since it is in the oil filter, your are not relying on the particulates to settle as in the case of a magnetized oil plug. Yamaha has also pioneered a process called DiASil that will become more prevalent as time goes by.
3. The filter flows oil easier and therefore the engine has less heat and parasitic loss due to the oil system itself. I would not bank on any large increase but a measurable one in apples to apples dyno test between this filter and a paper element type. Especially the one your "Filter Guru" favors.
4. The aluminum case also doubles as a heat sink for the oil system. Aside from the case function, I was especially pleased with it's form and construction. It can also be customized to match the bike.
5. Easy on, easy off.
6. You always have a filter. With motorcycles, it is not always as easy as going to Wally World to get another. Oil changes usually start with a long trip to a MC shop or going online to get another before hand. With the new addition to my family, I have even less free time for things like this.

After reading the review and studying the filter, I would have to disagree. JMHO

I see your points but the engineer that designed the filter for the aircraft wasn't the same engineer that designed this filter. If it was they would have done a better job of more filter area & smaller hole size in the screen.I wouldn't trust the magnet to make up for larger particles than should be flowing through the screen. At some point the magnet will only hold so many particles.

Since your going to sell this I at least would appreciate you checking the hole size in the screen when you have 1 on hand.Metric 3 way calipers & some different size wire should be enough to see what size holes are in the screen.Your opinion on the size of the screen holes would be much better than the guy who wrote the article or the claims of the manufacturer of the filter IMO.I made parts for aircraft & the M1A tank on a CNC machining center for 30 years.

I used to use an Oberg oil filter for my cars. Expensive, but acted as an oil cooler and filtered down to 10 microns (if I recall correctly). Particles have to be of a certain size before they are considered big enough to cause problems. Different tolerances for different applications.

Besides, some people will buy these for the visual appeal. Others may consider the potential increase in cooling of the oil, and others may want max flow for max power.

The reality is that we have lots of anecdotal information from people who swear by brand nnn oil, or brand xxx filters, or nnWnn weight oil, or syth vs dino, but in reality is seems that the vast majority of people get rid of their bikes LOOOONG before they have oil related problems. Even if someone jumps in and shares their tale of woe, it's just one data point. I certainly have my opinions (such as not using Fram filters because of their cheap cardboard internals), but not everyone agrees with me (even though they should.... lol).

So... I think they look cool. Probably add some oil cooling benefit, probably filter small enough particles to be adequate, and give us yet one more thing to talk about. But I'll probably not buy one, yet.....

That was the point for me buying the filter , did you have much shavings on the Magnetic drain plug too ? Or did the filter catch them all ?
Thanks Ted for Posting up.

Nothing was on the drain plug, but is it Magnitic? I'm thinking it's not..

All this mess was from installing the wrong size bolt heads on my DD clutch spring..Changed my oil twice when this happened and still as you can see i had a lot left over..

Mine is Magnetic but not sure if the former owner changed it , the bike had 700 miles when I bought it , I kinda think they come with it.
