TOPIC: Oil pump recall in San Diego or LA area

Oil pump recall in San Diego or LA area 11 months 7 hours ago #1

Hi
I'm looking for a Yamaha dealer’s mechanic in the San Diego or LA area who has done a number the vmax oil pump recalls correctly.

From what I’ve read about it on this forum, the procedure they’re following doesn’t include the Squeeze test of:
1.) Use a Screwdriver or long Allen Head Key and turn the Oil Pump Gear with some Force !
2.) If the Gear isn't turning, fine, it's meshed properly with the Clutch Basket.
3.) If it is turning, it's not meshed and the Oil Pump Gear will break when you tighten down the Bolt.
4.) You use the Tool to turn the Gear and once it lines up with the Gear on the Basket, it will click, the Basket will fall into Place and everything with the Oil Pump Nut is fine

Maybe they have some other mesh verification procedure that they're not consistently performing

Or maybe the current consensus is to simply wait on the recall until the clutch is worn-out and needs replacing anyway, eh?

thanks & regards, A_Star

Yes, it's as simple as i wrote.

If hadn't been at the Shop and looked over the Mech's Shoulder, my Bike would have been a Victim too. You can print it out and take it with you to the Mech, asking him to perform the Movement Check before tightening down the Clutch Nut. Takes 30 Seconds to check, including the Time to search the Tool ....

Ok it's a bit away from LA, but Yamaha of Cucamonga, CA is who did mine. Took their time and did a bang up job. I had the filter and oil replaced at the same time. The shop has certified guys, I even had them do the Ygear lower kit, took the whole rear end off the bike and no issues.

I waited while mine was done, watched the whole thing, took two hours. :hi:

thanks for the referral!

did you notice if the mechanic got lucky and the gears just happened to mesh correctly, or did he have to align them in some fashion before tightening the clutch nut?

This is exactly what I intend to do!

I haven't opened the clutch housing so I need some further clarification too: the screwdriver is accessing the oil pump gear from the outside of the basket, so some part of the oil pump gear is still exposed when the basket is installed, right? Or does it mesh with the inside of a ring gear on the bottom of the basket?

He took Out the basket set it aside. Pulled the pump checked for damage. Installed new pump being sure ti was seated properly. Took each piece of the clutch out of the basket and inspected for wear or damage. Seated each plate, closed the basket, double checked the assembly and closed up the side. Installed new oil filter, added oil and took for a test ride. Grinning as he returned. I have over 3,000 miles since that day, no issues. The drive will be worth it. Good luck. Let me know when you're here if you come and I'll meet you.

I had my recall done recently (January 2012) at Pacific Motorsports in Harbor City, CA (310.891.6990). I did not watch them perform the work, however, I haven't had any issues yet. At some point in scheduling the appointment , that is if you decide to go with them, request that Robert(Bob) perform/supervise the work. He is their resident vmax expert as well as an owner/enthusiast. Good luck...

On a side note, are there any modded vmax out here in the l.a. area. I'd like to check out before I make a decision on modifications..

Thanks,
Robert

The lower Part of the Oil Pump Gear can been seen from Outside below the Clutch Basket.

Usually, the Mech will place the Bike on a Platform Lift and on the Side Stand to perform the Job. Once the Clutch Basket is back on the Axle, it will either be meshed up with the Oil Pump Gear or not. If it's meshed, you can't turn the Gear, if not, it will move and the Clutch Basket will slip down on the Axle and fall in Place with a nice "Klick" Sound, driven by Gravity. That's the Ticket.
