Change the fuel filter if you haven't done so. I had problem with my 97 thought the fuel filter had been change and it hadn't. I rode all summer and had the jerkin and fluttering while riding. Once I changed it, the problem was gone. Just a thought. Dannie Great Idea, where's the Fuel Filter located ? |

Lutz,
Do you know which vin is recalled regarding the wire harness of the us version? I have a similar problem with all stock bike. Holding 2trpm throttle position the bike will break a bit and suddenly speeds a bit up. Also engine breaking is not steady under 3trpm. Best regards from spain Marc |

But, it's inside the Tank, a Cushion-like Pad which is attached the Fuel Pump Pickup. It's not supposed to be tinkered with. marc007 wrote: Lutz, Do you know which vin is recalled regarding the wire harness of the us version? I have a similar problem with all stock bike. THE BULLITEN READS AS FOLLOWS:
Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2009 VMAX (VMX17Y/YC) model motorcycles. In affected motorcycles, improper resistance in wiring could cause unstable engine idle speed and/or keep idle speed from falling below about 3000 rpm when the throttle is released, preventing a proper return to idle that could result in an accident with injury or death. A Technical Bulletin with all necessary information will be provided in the near future. Until then, please suspend sale of any new VMAX motorcycle in the following affected ranges: VMX17Y VP29E-0000013-0000611 VMX17YC VP29Y-0000033-0000132 As with all safety recall campaigns, Yamaha will be notifying all registered owners of affected units by mail. |

The wire harness recall work was completed by South Seas Cycle Exchange in Honolulu on my VIN#: 208 yesterday. The work including a brief road test took about 2 hours.
I had been experiencing the following symptoms intermittently since purchasing the bike used last April with about 900 miles on it: -- engine rpm holding at about 3000 when throttle released -- engine abruptly stalling when stopped at traffic light or when making a slow turn with throttle closed -- engine idle at 1500 rpm instead of normal 1000 rpm -- engine speed increasing when letting out (engaging) clutch slowly with brake on and in first gear I reacted quickly and appropriately to minimize the danger during the worst of these episodes thanks to my instincts developed over the past 40+ years of riding. I called the previous owner about the problems I was experiencing with the bike and he indicated that he had never experienced these symptoms. Unfortunately, due to some historical and unique business relationships here in Hawaii we have our own Yamaha distributor separate from Yamaha USA. This resulted in no second year of factory warranty coverage for my bike since the YES program is not available for Hawaii purchased bikes. I was unable to obtain any support at all from Yamaha USA. The Hawaii distributor, very small with no support staff (only 5 employees including the owner), was sympathetic but referred me to the selling dealer for any help I might need at my own expense. The selling dealer discontinued their relationship with Yamaha for, among other business reasons, the lack of customer and technical support at the distributor level and the lack of the YES program here. The good news is that I did have an extended warranty, transferred from the previous owner with Western Service Contract Corp. I discussed the problem with the service manager at South Seas Cycle Exchange but decided to postpone a service visit indefinitely for two reasons: the intermittent nature of the problem(s) which would make diagnosis difficult and expensive and the need for and difficulty of obtaining approval for any work from the warranty company since the cause of the problem(s) and Yamaha recommended solutions(s)were as yet unknown. A contributing factor to my decision to do nothing and wait was the "work around" that permitted me to use the bike and put about 2000 miles on it. The "work around" was a simple test that proved to be a 100% reliable indicator that problems would or would not occur during a ride. It consisted of simply starting the bike in neutral with clutch out (engaged); then, with clutch in (released) and while keeping the brake on, putting the bike in first gear and slowly letting the clutch out. If the observed engine speed increased it was a sure indication of problems during the ride and I would turn off the ignition and restart the engine after a few seconds to test again. If the engine decreased decreased as the clutch engaged slowly with the brake on (normal and expected) then the bike could be relied upon for safe operation throughout the ride. FYI Diagnostic mode test results: BEFORE SUB LEAD INSTALL: Throttle fully closed D:01 - 20 D:13 - 20 D:14 - 21 D:15 - 21 AFTER SUB LEAD INSTALL: D:01 - 15 D:13 - 15 D:14 - 17 D:15 - 17 Aloha, Ben |
