TOPIC: Suspension setup

Suspension setup 1 year, 10 months ago #1

I am finally getting around to setting up my suspension properly.
I have a mate that is a bit of a guru on this stuff.

Does anyone know what the suspension static sag or 'rider sag' for front and rear should be for the Max?

We looked through the whole manual with no luck on finding it.

Thanks

A good starting point for total sag is around 30% of suspension travel - which is 36mm for the front and 33mm for the rear (front travel is 120mm and rear is 110mm). Be sure to account for static sag (the amount the bike by itself causes the suspension to sag). To measure that, you have to unload the suspension completely and measure it fully extended (lift the front and rear up individually). Then re-measure it with the bike on the ground, upright with no rider (you may have to repeat to get an average due to the friction of the suspension components). That's your static sag. Then measure the sag again with you on the bike (feet in riding position). That's your rider sag. Static sag + rider sag should be 30% of the travel. Adjust your preload to get the measurement that you want. It's a 2 person job for sure. I usually use the fork seals to triple clamp for the front measurement points and the top of the swingarm (near the axle) to the rear fender for the rear.

That should get you close. Remember to lift with your legs... this thing is heavy! Hope this helps, double check the total travel numbers - I got them from the specs online.

Some good advice there from Gap Rider.

Typically your static sag (unladen) will be around 5-10mm rear and 20-25mm front. Then set up you sag laden as above.

I also backed off the compression damping at both ends but the rebound damping ended back at the factory settings.

I'm too old, ugly, and tired, to try to comprehend all this. Can't we just put our height and weight into a computer somewhere and have it spit out our suspension numbers?

Unfortunately you have to add riding style, road conditions and preference into the equation. Ain't life a bitch

Thanks Badger, I knew my solution was way too easy to initiate.

Those are all good tips guys and I understand how to do it.
Like I said I have access to somebody who hs a very food grasp on the subject.
You still didn't answer my question though.

The question is: what is the recommended Rider sag for the Vmax?

I know how to measure it and why.
At the moment my front is 50mm and rear is 33mm as total sag for my weight.
which according to Gap Rider the front needs to be around 36mm.
So I had to stiffen my front preload down from 3 to 2 to get ideal sag for my weight and get me to about 36 and then compensate on compression damping.

I would have thought that ideal front would have been around 42-45?

As said previously a good starting point is 33% of the suspension travel. If you ride on perfect smooth roads or racetracks you could drop that to 25%. Start at 33% and try it.
