TOPIC: Starting fuel

Starting fuel 1 year, 11 months ago #1

My bike is getting harder to start from cold 4 or 5 times on the starter to get it to fire up and when it does you can see raw fuel coming out of the exhaust for a short time and a very fuel smell but when it's hot it starts fine.
Has anyone played with the start up fuel adjustment on the PCV with any success? I have Mikes xpipe and all the mods to go with it done and using a custom map which is awesome.
Should the start up fuel only be adjusted when hooked to a dyno?

looks like I'm the only one with this problem I will try adjusting the fuel at start up and post the results here!
I have be running 95 octane fuel so might try 98 before I try anything else.

Yamaha folks told us to use 98 for this bike. It's possible to switch from 95 to 98 every other tank, but officially this bike should be run on 98. But Scale, really I don't know if this is the source of your problem, but it's worth a try.

I have the same problem with mine. Had catsass system custom map and a puff of raw fuel when cold. Just put on the
akrapovic system and i am thinking about going back to dyno. Are we the only ones with this problem?

Just FYI 98 octane in Europe is different from 98 octane in the US! They use a different formula to calculate it.

Ok I've ran my bike on 98 octane fuel for the last 2 weeks but still the same at cold start up but, last weekend I went riding with some buddies and noticed how they were starting their bikes.
Now, I've been starting my bike as it suggests in the owners manual not letting the starter turn the engine over more than 3 or 4 times to conserve the battery life, which seems to load it up with fuel as it takes 3 or more time to fire at cold.
So just lay on the starter till your bike fires up and it is still a bit fuely but nothing like before.

Still might try changing the % of fuel at start up but this seems ok for now.

Scale, mine starts a little hard when cold, but usually only twice on the starter, maybe three at worst. I dont know why, but it runs just fine when it starts.

You must stay on the starter a little longer than you might be used to with this bike. I noticed that the first time I started it at the dealer. Hit the starter like 4 times.....looked at the dealer and said "what's up with this"? He laughed...and said just hold it until it starts, which I do now....never an issue starts every time. It's much worse (IMHO) to keep hitting the starter, just hold it in a bit longer and off you go.

For whatever reason, I noticed that with the race ecu it starts better- always starts on the third revolution now.
