yucky "brown" rearend "bearing retainer" removal? 1 year, 11 months ago #1

Gen 2. It's the brown part on the rear pumpkin. (part 14 shown here) I want to powder coat this piece I thought was just a cover. Doesn't look that simple. Is it? Do I have to do anything with the bearings, replace any seals, can I do it with the bike on the kickstand without removing the pumpkin? Anyones help would be appriciated. Randy

GOOD QUESTION RANDY!

I've been wondering the same thing since I scratched mine up when it was brand new with the rear Paddock stand! I checked with the dealer and seen the same thing as you.

i would suggest paint instead of powdercoating since it does have a bearing & seal. you can remove it with the bike on the rear stand (it may drip a little bit of oil).

note that the cover is held in with the six screws but is also the "nut" of the axle. i usually just loosen the axle by one turn, remove the six bolts and then spin the cover off the bike.

Thanks alot Ken. So, just to be sure, when I do spin it off, I will not upset the rubber seal or anything? Thanks

I was thinking about wrapping this piece in carbon fiber as well but would probably have to seal the hole. Would this have any ill effect?

Powdercoat it. I just removed mine and saw the seal. I'm ordering a new seal and when it comes in then I'm going to powdercoat the outer cover. Of course I'm going to mask off the inside bearing shaft support.
