TOPIC: Akrapovic Install - need help

Akrapovic Install - need help 1 year, 10 months ago #1

So...it's Vmax mod weekend for the akropovic midpipe and monster air. For the akropovic, I was doing fine until I needed to disconnect the rear header downpipes. I am not mechanical but the bolt is very deep in the bike - at least a foot. I got the one loose by using several extensions and cutting off a 90 degree allen key at the corner and attaching on the end of the extensions. But I can't seem to get aligned with the other. Any suggestions? The manual calls for a 5mm swiveling head allen key and I don't even know what that is.

i use a 3/8" drive socket with a long 5mm allen. you can find them at sears and other tool stores. it is almost impossible to loosen the two clamps without one.

Thanks. Used a 5 inch extension, 3 2 inch extensions, a deep well socket and a sawed off allen key. And YES it worked. OMG..the open headers are the loudest thing I've ever heard. I don't think I made the neighbors happy.....it's midnight here! Can't wait to install the mid-pipe tomorrow.

Make sure you use the copper paste that comes with the Akros for the gaskets. It makes the rear headers slide over those graphite gaskets a LOT easier.

For all the other titanium joints use the white grease that comes with the setup. It will make sure they don't seize and you can get them apart the next time you want to take them off.

Hope this helps!

Got it. Thx. The akro is installed...and WOW does she sound good! The video clips just don't do it justice. The sound is perfect...not abnoxiously loud, but a wonderful "I'm here, and I'm bad" sound.

Next I am getting ready to install the monster big air. What is the best map to use? I have downloaded monster autotune map, evoluzione advanced and itgoes map. Or is there another one?

All I have is the monster big air and the akro. I do NOT have any top speed fix, or exup eliminator, etc.

And where can I find Monster Big Air installation instructions? I have searched this forum and can't find them. They didn't come with them.

I would consider installing the Akrapovic cross over pipe that eliminates the catalytic converter, but I have yet to hear anything good about the big air kit. I had a generation 1 VMAX that was re-jetted with a Stage 7 kit when I went to the 4 K&N filters, eliminating the air box, but the generation 2 VMAX is so technologicial with the fuel injection and the intake, that eliminating the air box and stuffing on 4 K&N's doesn't necessarily make it any faster.

When you "unrestrict" a modern factory motorcycle there is some room for improvement in many areas. The Monster Air kit will produce more HP and thus make the bike faster through the 1/4 mile.
Early dyno runs found that running with an open airbox made a big hp gain. The Monster Air kit gets as close to that scenario as possible by providing little to no restriction on intake air flow. It will compliment any of the cat eliminator exhaust options that are available, if you are looking for maximum hp.

Yeah..little surprised at the "yet to hear anything good about the big air kit" comment. Anybody that has been a member of this forum for any length of time knows that people have been raving about this modification ever since it came out. The only real complain I have heard is that some think it is too loud...and that's a matter of personal preference and trade-off to the power gains realized. I am going to start a new thread with how my weekend mods turned out. I am not disappointed!
