TOPIC: Gasket Questions

Gasket Questions 5 months, 1 week ago #1

I am planning on dropping my oil on Friday to change my crankcase cover and clutch cover. Do I need to use any RTV silicone with these metal looking gaskets? What can I expect when I remove the clutch cover while it's on the side stand? Is hydraulic fluid gonna come pouring out? Is any thing else gonna pop out on me that I should be aware of. There is an aluminum looking piece that is screwed into the back side of the cover does that hold any springs in place inside or anything? also what do these bolts need to be torqued down to when I put them back? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have never done any work like this before on a motor

You don't have to drain the oil. On the side stand the clutch cover will come off without hardly a drip. You don't need any sealant, you can even re-use the old gasket if it is not damaged. Just make sure the seating surfaces are clean (no grit)and just bolt it back up. Torque spec is 9 ft lbs. - make sure you "iron" them out a little at a time working opposite bolts back and forth. Nothing should pop out, unless you heard something break in there before you started.

I just see you said crankcase cover too. Are you taking off the cover behind the clutch cover also? Or did you mean something else?

Hey Tyler
These parts took a long time to do and I hope to finally get them on the bike just so I can get my hands on the bikes original ones cause I know I can do better. Especially the clutch cover which was the tougher one of the two. I tried to rush it along at the end and got some air bubbles in the resin. Same problem I ran into with exhaust cans but I already have another wrap on them as well

I think that's actually called the "middle gear cover". Not sure how much oil might run out of there, if you put a block of wood under the kickstand it might be OK, but I'm just guessing. Same torque spec on those bolts.

Aah the big cover is done and not a drop of fluid hit the floor. Was able to re-use the gasket as well. Will try and get a pic of it on the bike later when I get home from work. Looks pretty good from where I'm standing though. Now that darn waterpump cover
