TOPIC: Engine Knocking Problem

Engine Knocking Problem 1 year, 10 months ago #1

I have a 1985 V-Max that runs great but makes a very noticable knocking noise. I removed and disassembled the motor, checked the bearings with plasti-gauge and found nothing out of spec. I thought a couple of the wrist pins had very slight play so I replaced those connecting rods and wrist pins. The valve clarence was right on the money for all of the valves. After all of this work, the engine sounds exactly the same.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Bob

Bob,

Is it after it warms up and is at idle?

It is much more noticable as it warms up and can be heard at idle and also through the RPM range.

Have you check your carburator membranes?

Check if all the 4 exhaust have the same temperature outlet during 5 minutes after start running engine ( With your hand, take care!).

Synchro of carburators ..

Spark plugs are new?

Check level in carburators capacity, procedure is describe in the work shop manual.

Problem with ignition sensor ( Fragile on Vmax Gen1, particulary old one before 93)

All the Gen 1s Ive eve been around (including mine) are just plain noisy. They do have a definite loud knock to them. And they click and clack and tick too (I'm being dead serious) They are very noisy motors.

Take off each plug wire one at a time and see if you can tell what cylinder it is coming from,
what exhaust is on it?

Are you sure its not the clutch basket or a second gear issue! How many miles on the beast?

Well, all gen 1's have noisy engines, but mostly the clutch basket is the noise you are most likely concerned about.

Isolate the sound by listening to each section.

Is the Noise more prone when you have the Bike on the Side Stand and changes when you bring it up into upright Position ?
