TOPIC: Rear tire size/ lower gear ratio.

Rear tire size/ lower gear ratio. 1 year, 9 months ago #1

Could use some help on my next rear tire. Mine is due for a change and would actually like a smaller profile than the stock Bridgestone. I am running at elevation and am in need for a little help for lowering the gear ratio for better drag launches. Thanks........................Uncle Vinny

Metzler 210/40 18 is about the only choice you have. That's the tire Lee set the best 60ft times on a new Vmax with. It changes the gear ratio enough to where you have to use 5th gear at the drags. See the Bradenton Drag event thread. It held its own against a race slick and worked well at 20 psi, but be aware that getting it on the rim is tricky. It takes 2 people with spoons that know what they're doing to get it on the rim...

The Bad boys together His slick rteally helped, but my choice for a street tire was no slouch tonight

9.51 & 9.74 It don't get much better than tonights test run of the all new 09 Vmax!

Still to this day, my bike with that tire holds the best 60ft time (1.579) on a new Vmax (thanks Lee).

Thanks Bad Max, I've been getting my bike ready to do some 1/8th mile racing at a local track. We are at 7000' elevation. Doesn't matter where you have your rpm at launch, it bogs badly. I'm hoping that we get some re-flash help. Again thanks............Uncle Vinny

What is the actual Problem on "getting it on the Rim" ?

Is the inner Rim Diameter not small enough to accomodate for placing the second Side inbetween the Humps?

Or lies the Problem more in getting the Tire seated beyond the Humps ?

Bad Maxx, I am trying very hard to get my bike to launch better, any other suggestions?

Re:Rear tire size/ lower gear ratio. 1 year, 9 months ago #7

Both, it's actually for the Yamha Raider which has a 7" rim so you have to squeeze the tire once it's on (one side) to push the tire down off the rim bead, to get the other side on. Then once you have it on the rim, the sidewalls are so short & tire so stiff, we actually have to roll it around on the floor and drop it over & over to get the tire to fit up on the bead. My tire guy & I have it down to a science, but it still takes both of us about 45 minutes to put the low profile Metzler on.

PS. Quit trying to launch it so hard & get the clutch out quickly (even if it's at 1700rpm). then pin the throttle. Let the YCCT do it's job. You'll be surprised how well it works! Below my big ass broke into the 6's with that tire, stock bike & slipping clutch. I knew it would work to lower gear ratio & it DOES!

My test of the low profile Metzler tire, stock bike, from over a year ago...

WE ALWAYS ran better MPH than that and we ran a stock MAX with stock tire and stock exhaust and no 120 lb rider
