TOPIC: OEM license plate light connector question
OEM license plate light connector question 3 years 1 week ago #1
|
I'm changing out the stock (lollipop) turn signals and the stock license plate light with some LEDs.
I've found the perfect indicator leads that match the VMax connectors perfectly. These indicator leads are for Suzuki, but fit Max perfectly. I picked them up at Cycle Gear, but the pinout for the license plate light doesn't match the turn signal pinout. Does anyone know whether or not the OEM female plug for the plate light can be re-pinned without damaging the female connector or the pins themselves? My preference would be re-pinning the female connector over having to cut and solder wires! Thanks |

I think you should be able to change the pins to any location on the conector that you want. Should be a release mechanism. Might need some eye glass tool to get in to it!

Gave up and clipped the wires. I tried everything thin or small I could find to push the locking bar open that prevents the pins from backing out of the Female Connector, but no such luck. It's the yellow one in the picture here.....
Would love it if my local Yamaha has both the pins and the female connector so I could make it like stock.

It's done.
I found out from my local Yammy dealer that the female connector is unavailable except with a sub-harness, or at least that what they told me. They said they had a tool to unlock that damn locking bar for the connector, but how much would they have charged for that? I did try a jewelers screwdriver and even some VERY stiff wire pounded flat, but no go. I'm sure that someone out there sells the connectors unpinned, but I just cut the thing out. Pictures soon. |

Squeeze, where were you when I needed you?????????? I could have and would have waited for that. Thank you anyhow, that's a great site for future needs. The tag bolt lights I was trying blew the 15amp fuse again and again. I tried hooking it up to the original wiring on the advice of the manager at Cycle Gear, thanks dude you owe me some fuses, for the license plate light. It needed to be wired into the fuse box directly. I passed, returned the tag bolt lights and went with a basic LED light. |

Soldering your wires then heat shrink over them is the best way.
Just "tin" all of your wire ends, slide heat shrink over wires first, then solder together... then shrink.... done!! On the gen one, you could almost gain a whole volt by soldering all of your connections... I know it's nice to have connectors, especially where you need to remove stuff... Just an FYI Mike D |

I did find the basic connectors with the bullet-end type connections, so the turn signals were taken care of with those. Nothing I could have added to the stock wiring would have worked out with the amperage the LED Tag Bolts needed. |
