Just checked out the service manual for the valve adjustment. Looks like nothing special about the v-max vs other bikes. Like on my previous bikes, I plan to check the clearances myself. Of course, this won't be for another 25,500 miles.
$500 is probably taking into account the time it might take to remove/install the cams to install new shims IF adjustment is needed. Looks like if you have basic hand tools and a good feeler gauge, you can at least check the valves yourself in a few hours. Mike |

Don't do it Q. Let it go and then we can see what happens to you. You can save us all big bucks if nothing happens to your Max. We will all pitch in and buy you a T-shirt or something.

Ted, I would definitely check, or have them checked. Two reasons, head off any performance hit if you are out of spec, or heading that way. Secondly, Head off any warranty problems by getting it documented that you had them checked.
If you can find a motorcycle shop with a good reputation, or a buddy that can help you with it, that should suffice. Wouldn't hurt to take some pics if you do it yourself, again, for 2 reasons. First, you will have photo evidence if warranty issues arise. Second, Post up them pictures for the rest of us and have it added to the Wiki. Mike |
