TOPIC: Request feedback on ABS Light coming ON
Request feedback on ABS Light coming ON 2 years 6 months ago #1

I know that there has been talk on some other threads about the ABS Light coming on for in many cases, some UNKNOWN reason...
I would like to get some feedback from some of you that have had the ABS Light come on, at any time during normal riding conditions... It would really help, if responses could include answers to the following questions... 1) Do you have the 240mm Wide Rim Installed? 1A) If so, is the Swing Arm shaft hole cover, covered? 1B) If so, what type of material did you use (ie...metallic or non-metallic material, etc.) 2) Does the ABS Light stay ON steady, ALL of the time? 2A) If NOT, is it doing some "blinking" sequence? And if so, explain the sequence. 2B) Also if NOT, how often or possibly under what sort of conditions, does it come ON? (ie...rain, dry, humid, hard shoot-outs, normal riding, etc.) 3) Did you yourself or someone else, ever fully evaluate and determine exactly what was causing the problem? 3A) If so, please do share... 4) During the times that the ABS Light is ON, have you ever had the chance to see if the ABS works or not? I am trying to help a fellow member with his 2009 Non-California Model, that has the ABS Light come on occasionally...it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the rain, as it comes on a random, as far as I can tell... Perhaps with some feedback from other members that have had this problem, we can isolate the cause... I have NEVER seen these problem on both my 2009 and 2010...the ONLY difference between those bikes and my buddy's is, the 240mm Wide Rim... Appreciate any and all feedback, Art |

Good morning sweetie!
The only time my light was blinking was after the integrated turn/brake light was installed. Standard warning flash rate, no wide tire yet. It flashed only when the ABS system was activated, ie: hard stop... Hope this helps..... Randi PS: After the bike is turned off and the ABS re-sets, light goes out!!!!! |

Art,
You asked about the light blinking in Sequence. I've questioned that in past threads, and never got an answer. Does Yamaha's ECU flash code numbers to diagnose problems ? Mark |

Randi, Every bit of info helps in isolating this problem... I have an idea on what has happened but wanted to see if some others would share their experiences, so as to reinforce what I am suspecting is the problem... I just didn't want to be the AH, when I reported the problem to the Wizards at Yamaha...it always helps if there are multiple owners with the same problem... Anyways...will wait to see if anyone else chimes in, that has had problems..I know they are out there, because ABS problems have been reported numerous times right here on StarVmax... It's OK people to have problems...we just need to see if we can isolate the cause... I am sure that Yamaha has had calls concerning this and probably have some folks looking into it...hopefully a cause is revealed before something bad happens... Thanks Randi... Art |

Mark Mark, The reason for me mentioning the blinking, was to provide some things that do and have occurred with the ABS System, according to other problems reported right here on StarVmax... As I wrote in response to Randi's feedback, I have my suspicions on what is going on, but am trying to analyze this further, so that I get it right and have all of the symptoms...so that I can make an educated report back to Yamaha with as many details as possible... The ABS light does NOT come ON for no reason...there is a cause for each and every occurrence, whether the ABS is OFF, ON or blinking... The service manual is quite detailed...and there are a lot of great troubleshooting procedures... Having said that, has anyone actually read each step in the ABS troubleshooting section???...If so, cut and paste the section B-6 from the manual for me...because my original Yamaha Service Manual does not have Section B-6, which is called out in the troubleshooting steps...and that section is what I need to look at, to see what it says... Anyway...Mark...that is one of the reasons why I asked you yesterday, if you knew about that other V-Max site...haven't yet decided to go elsewhere yet, as I know that StarVmax is the best source for technical help for the GEN-2, because of all of it's knowledgeable owners... Art Well Art, I guess I couldn't blame you if you went to another site. Seeing as only one of 'Our Knowledgeable Owners' has responded, That being Randi ! I don't consider myself as Knowledgeable, At least not Technically ! Kinda of a shame really ! I know there are countless times that you have given pages of technical help to those in need ! Now you ask for a little input on a problem your having, And hardly a response ? Very Disappointing To Say The Least ! Mark |

Mark & Art:
I thought it was really unique that we are the only ones on this post! It seems that everyone else is not concerned about the issue. To date; it sill baffles me and the local dealer as why the ABS does what it does. Me personally, I think it has to do with resistance on the ground side when I changed my rear light. Since the goof ball who made the light doesn't seem to give a hoot, they made the last sale to me. It's an easy fix to wire the light light the factory, but not happening! Love ya's both! Randi~~~~~~~ PS Hope you find what you are looking for! |

Randi~~~~~~~ PS Hope you find what you are looking for! Randi, First, let me say Mark...I am not ignoring you...I will contact you later and I do really appreciate your posts and your continued support for the "cause"... Ok...Randi...I was talking to MAXI yesterday and he too is suspecting that the replacement of the OEM turn signals with an LED type, may be the cause for this ABS light coming ON...he now tells me that the problem started happening around the time that he replaced the turn signals and the 200mm rim with the 240mm rim...but really can't remember which mod was done at the time that the problem started appearing... When you say that the GROUND side resistance of the rear light you installed, MAY be the cause...are you saying that the ground lead is not properly grounded to the chassis or is it more of a problem internal to the light's resistance on the ground side of the light???... Either way...it would be an easy check with a ohmmeter, if the light can be taken apart...and if it is on the harness side...just a quick check between the light's ground side to the negative side of the battery to see if there is a voltage potential difference... Can you provide some clarification of the above???... Am going to MAXI's place, late this morning (in about 2 hours), 30 Oct... All the best, Art |
