TOPIC: Double D clutch spring.
Double D clutch spring. 2 years 1 month ago #1

I had the double clutch spring mod installed on my bike. As on some bikes the springs misaligned and this created a problem with the clutch disengaging. Any vendors making a heavier spring or can you tig the 2 springs together to prevent this from happening?

Yes they can be tack welded, but if you install both properly & torque properly it shouldn't do it again..

Some have seen some shifting of the top spring. PCW racing was working on a heavier spring but as far as I know it is not available yet. Many people are running the DD with no problems. Mark |

I installed the springs carefully and torqued them to the Yamaha specs and procedure. Outer spring shifted enough to where some of the tangs on the outer clutch spring shifted enough to where they were outside of the retainer. This caused binding and clutch would not release properly.

Happened to you...I got ya. My personal opinion on the whole thing is that when doing the DD the bolt the TQ recommendations from Yamaha are no longer applicable. There is not enough force applied to deflect the 2 springs so that there is adequate tension to hold them both in place. The stock bolts are garbage and should be thrown out...in fact Yamaha does not sell them anymore they have been superseded by grade 8 bolts. Then the bolt torque can and should be increased. This of course is my opinion....I'n not a mechanical engineer.....although I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Mark |

I took the stock spring retainer to a local machine shop and had it copied with twice the depth. My 2 springs nest in place perfectly and cannot slip. Like it was made for it now.

That's a great solution, you really should have 50 of those made up and kit them up with new bolts, a spring and a gasket. Or just the retainer. You will sell them all. IMO Mark |

I don't know ? Why do some people have problems with this mod and some don't ?
There's nothing in common with all the people who have had problems--Miles on bike when done, Bolts replaced or not, how they ride ? At least to my memory there is no common thread with the failures ! Did it on both my 2009 & 2010 One at 1000 miles and one at 7500 miles--Both work great ! GO FIGURE ? Mark |

I paid my machine shop $20 to make mine. I could sell for $25 and take pre-orders with the intent to get a volume discount and make a little more profit? It boils down to how many would want one for $25 and how many would just take their own to a machine shop of their choice? Since I have a stock for a pattern, my offering would be more to save down time while being made. I guess if you figure buying a new stock retainer and then paying a machine shop to duplicate only deeper. Maybe.
