Yes, the heat shields are welded to the header pipe.

Ceramic coating is sprayed on and then Baked so you could do it all at once shield on but one word of caution it is not very durable to abrasion i would say even less than paint and way less than powder coating and on direct heat areas like just out of the engine it does not last as long as you might think but does look pretty when it's fresh , I personally wish I would have purchased my current 4-1 header system in the nude , I am not against Ceramic but some coatings and coaters are better than others , I do put a lot of miles on my bike and that does not help , I have thought about stripping down to bare stainless media blasting or glass beading but really dont know how that would look so I suspect i will just re do what i have

Stainless is hard to work with, a grinder or cutoff wheel is what you'll need once the pipe's off. You may be better off to coat it as is and not remove the shield from the pipe.

Hey Captain, isn't this system the same as yours but in the "nude"?

Would you just leave it like that, or how would you redo it?

When I asked Dale Walker if he had a black system, he recommended I use Jet-Hot Ceramic Coating. That's how I'm going to do it when I get his exhaust system. We have one locally here in Phoenix.

I have researched them and asked around and it seems they do great work. They gave me an estimate of $230 to do the the entire system; headers, mid pipe, and mufflers.

I don't know who blacked out my pipes originally. I'm not even sure if it's ceramic or paint...or both. The headers are holding up excellent but the mufflers are peeling really bad. It's strange because the header area gets the most abuse from road grit and shtuff.

Whoever did it left the heat shields on the header pipes.

I have to agree with Bob 100%. I had a set of Reinhardt's ceramic coated. First they had to strip off all the chrome. Then they spray them and baked them. Look real good when I first got them but now they are a little beat-up. The ceramic coating that I used is not very durable. If I had to do it again I would find something else to use. To bad Powder coating will not hold up to the heat.

Nelson yep looks like Hindle is offering the 4-1 in Europe that looks the same as mine but the price REALLY SUCKS
Live and learn on that I had a Thunderheader that i had what at the time was called K- Cote kind of a dull Aluminum
finish but that pipe stayed with me on 3 V Twins 2 HD's and the Custom I did a ground up on I think my buddy still
has it I would love to figure out what that was and get my system done I have the Carbon can so it would look fine
i will do some research it was very popular on drag cars and bike in the late 90's but was totally bullitproof and never
turned blue with a 107 S&S big block. I would have mine done in a Connecticut second.
can anyone help me on that it might me called something else now but was K Cote then like 97 .
