Owning both of these windshields is a plus most people won't indulge in, so I'm going to give my 2 cents on the choices currently offered by Yamaha. I've had my 2009 Vmax for 1 month so far & have done some mods here & there
First, the swap out was easy & took less than 15 minutes to do. I have just had my bike painted and wanted a new look so the Boulevard was chosen to go with the new paint. While it's a nice looking accessory for the vmax, I immediately noticed how much more air pressue I felt in the chest area, as well as the top of my arms. I noticed it when traveling to the store tonight, while I was wearing my favorite jacket. Usually when riding down the road i can unzip the jacket and reach into my shirt pocket for phone, cigs, sunglasses, or whatever. There's always an area when I unzip jacket that sticks out and i can reach right in. Not so with the Boulevard, the jacket was mashed up against my chest and pressing against me harder than I've felt before. As I said, my 09 came from dealer with Touring shield installed and I've never felt the normal blast of air from a naked (shieldless) Vmax, so this was somewhat of a surprise to me. Even when I unzipped the jacket to reach inside, it remained pressed up against me hard. It is also quite noticeable in the upper arm & shoulder area. I now have a feeling of weight being added to these areas. Simply put, the Boulevard shield may add a sportier look, but not without cost. The bike was definitely more slippery (thru the air) when riding with the Touring wind screen. The larger windscreen also afforded me (more than once) a haven from pelting rain, as I could easily duck down behind it for a safe ride home. There is NOTHING to duck behind with the Boulevard shield. While almost everyone likes the Boulevard screens looks, it comes at a cost compared to the Touring windscreen. The Touring screen actually does what it's supposed to do, while the smaller shield adds a "sportier" look. If you can only afford 1, my not so scientific testing, assures me the Touring windshield offers better protection, and may possibly get you better gas mileage. The difference is VERY noticeable, or I wouldn't have taken the time to write this for our members, to maybe assist them in their decision. Thanks for reading it & ride safe |

Thanks for the comparison. I ordered the Boulevard shield and have been riding without anything while I wait on it to arrive. You feel every pound of wind pressure riding shieldless. Although I like the look of the smaller shield I am sure I would appreciate the protection you get from the touring one. Do you know if there is a recommended speed restriction on the touring shield? I guessing you had a chance to put the shield to it limits. Any concerns about too much speed for the touring windshield?

Well, after writing this, I just did some more high speed testing. I do NOT like the Boulevard screen AT ALL! I feel slower on it. it's almost like riding with plywood attached to your arms, shoulders & chest. The Touring shield doesn't look bad at all. IMO, it looks great and affords you some wind protection without being obtrusive. I have only max'd out Max one time, and that was last night coming across Tampa Bay on a long bridge. I never once even had a concern about the shield not holding up at that speed. I feel the bike cuts thru the air much better with it installed. Some real world testing on a drag strip will probably confirm this. I actually think the Touring shield will cut a better timed quarter, than without, or with the Boulevard screen.
The Touring shield has multiple braces and you need not fear running high speeds with it attached to your bike properly. The Boulevard may be neat for looks, but thats about it. I'll keep it for a month maybe, for photos, etc. (and hate it the whole time), but it will be for sale soon. HUGE difference between the 2. I made the right decision when I got the Touring Shield It's no wonder people aren't getting crazy with speed. I wouldn't like riding a Vmax at all without a shield. Call me a pu$$y or whatever, but I have only known speed on an 09 Vmax with a shield. I would NEVER ride at the speeds i have without it. |

Bad_Max it looks like we're going to finally disagree on something.
From past experience with all sizes of shields I don't think you will get better 1/4 mile times with any add-on shield. Of course you get better times with the lay down bikes and all the body work. I'm not sure how the boulevard would affect times/speed but it does offer all the protection I want with a full face helmet. I might add, I don't ride much in the rain. Hey Bob, I guess you're all puffed up like a frog over that Oklahoma/Florida game. Now I'm going to whine: I think your team had an unfair advantage--called Tim Tebow!! Wow, that guy is great! Congratulations!!! Dan aka Damn I hate losing! |

Dan, I honestly wish you'd have taken max for a ride while you were here. I know you to be a very intelligent man & one ride would convince you, I promise. Night & day difference between the 2, and i repeat, I would NEVER ride at the speeds i have without that Touring shield. As a matter of fact, the Boulevard's coming off VERY soon, & will be for sale. If you have one on order, fine, but if you don't, I'll send you mine TOMORROW! It's that bad. You know me well enough to know i'm gonna tell it like it is. I had read the infomercial Yamaha released about it, and decided to see if it in fact deflected wind from the chest area. It does NOT, however the touring shield does, and I even showed you how low it is and that i have to duck down behind it to be fully protected. After using this other shield for 1 day, I've decided the Touring one doesn't need to be cut down even. It's perfect for me as is and will be going back on VERY soon.
Sorry about your football loss, but I don't even follow the games. Most of my spare time is spent watching speed channel. That's about it for the sports thing for me. Racing is about the only sports I can handle, or Monster truck showdowns. Horse Power baby, that's it for me.. |

I bought the Boulevard Windshield before I got the bike and thought that it looked cool but, after seeing one on a VMAX at the Houston bike show I HATED the look. I just didn't look right to me. I sticks out too far away from the tach and doesn't even come up above the shift light. As BM said, it provides little to no wind protection and I thought it was ugly.
So, I posted on this sight that it was for sale and sold it within hours. I even took a small loss on it but, I just wanted it gone so I could order the Touring Windshield. I got my bike in Houston and had to ride in home 90 miles with no windshield but put the Touring Windshield on the next day. IMO it looks better and it really does keep the wind off of you and make for a much more pleasant ride. The only thing I don't like about the Touring Windshield is the glare from the headlight the shines back at you in the shift light bubble but you get used to that real quick. I also wish the the shift light bubble was covered in metal like the Boulevard Windshield. That would look cool, I think. Weather permitting. I'll be at the drag strip Saturday and I am not taking the Touring Windshield off. The few hundreds of a second that I might gain without it aren't worth the time a to remove it and the lose of protection from the wind to me. |

Not many people have had the opportunity to try both. I have, these are the results as measured by me. Don't really care if anybody listens, but I know it to be true.

Thanks for the review. I've only put a few hundred miles on my Max and all without a shield. I can tell you the few times I topped out, I thought the wind might rip me off the bike. After a full day of spirited riding, my neck muscles were killing me. I have ordered the Touring shield and hope to get I get it SOON. I agree that it looks pretty good compared to most touring shields.
I've not riden the new Max with the mini shield, but I had almost a dozen legacy Maxes and always ran with the small shield. In that case the shield DID offer some relief and looked much better IMO. Maybe Yamaha or some other aftermarket will come up with a good looking shield that't a good mix between the Touring and Boulevard shields. |

Hey Bad_Max,
Thank you for your opinions. I would be curious to know the difference you feel with no windshield at all vs. the Boulevard. Of course, the Boulevard isn't going to deflect much wind vs. the touring. I think a better test would be completely naked vs. the Boulevard. As far as looks are concerned, I think there is no comparison between the two either. IMHO, I love the Boulevard...hands down. Perhaps it's the age thing (I'm only 29 and I'm not ready for a touring windscreen just yet) A couple of months ago, I rode my wife's Suzuki M50 (without a windscreen) from KC all the way down to Bikes, Blues, and BBQ in Fayetteville, AR (about a 10 hour round trip all in one day). I rode down there just to get a glimpse of Max for the first time. I will honestly say though that I wish I had a touring windscreen on that bike for that long of a ride. Man was I sore! The seating position sucks on that bike though! It reminded me of the seating position on my old M109R. Also, I may be interested in taking the boulevard off your hands. My dealer said he would sell it to me for 25% off MSRP $195.96 + taxes (around $200.00 all together). I figured that was an awesome price, but I would have to wait for one to come in and I think they are back ordered. As long as it's still in new condition, let me know when you're ready to sell it. I'm hoping that someone comes out with a third windscreen that's somewhere in the middle of the two (similar to the fly screen that was available on the legacy Max). That would probably be the one for me! Let's hear about the fully naked vs. Boulevard comparison if you're up for it and have the time??? It would be great to hear your opinion as I respect what you have to say. |
