TOPIC: How to Lower the Seat (every little bit helps)

How to Lower the Seat (every little bit helps) 3 years ago #1

I figured this was worth starting a new thread about.

It's only a small gain, but this is worth doing.

By the way,if you already know about this and i'm the only one on the whole site didn't, just excuse me OK (happens to me every now and then)

LOWERING THE SEAT
Take the seat off and turn it upside down. You'll see 5 rubber spacers(mounts/grommets/losers) whatever you want to call them. LOSE EM!
Actually, keep 1. You can use it as a spacer. It will mount on the top underneath side of the receiver (female piece) where the locator tab (male piece) on the front of the seat fits into. This will help hold the front of the seat down.

There is some extra spacing between the seat and the airbox cover, but nothing serious. The 1 electrical plug that looks like it might be in the way can be bent down a little but it should be OK. If anyone needs pics or or a better explaination, please let me know -
You'll notice how much lower you sit straight away. look forward to hearing how it works. Has been a big help for me.

every little bit helps

good luck - Paul

Yes, pics please! I can hold my own tiptoeing the bike, but it would be better (f.i in the mountains) to have some extra length!

Ok...so at 04:00 (yes, that's in the MORNING) California Time, I read these postings from you folks and run out to my garage with hex socket wrenches in hand and take apart my seat assembly and take some pictures...I haven't tried this lowering trick yet, but was wondering, which rubber standoff, kiwipaul, you were referring to when you said, leave that one on(Standoff "A", "B", "C", "D" or "E")???...

I think he meant, took them all six off the Seat Pan and mount one(they all should be the same) to the Part where the Tab of the Seat Pan, to the left of Rubber "C", hook up.

That's because the Tab will sit lower and therefore the there is nothing to catch on the opposite of the Seat Pan. I don't know if there's already a Hole for such a Spacer.

A and E, otherwise the seat does not fit tight against the filter cover and it gets all sloppy; I removed the rest plus cut the wings on both sides of the seat, since they are the ones that make you spread your legs apart most....no pun intended...

Don't look nice at all, but I'm safer, almost reach the ground completely with both feet and feel a lot more confident. Of course I will buy a seat from an aftermarket company as soon as they get one out, but in the mean time I'm safer; you might as well take a look at this small ordeal:

You can appreciate in the last pics, the removed wings of the saddle, letting you see some bolts normally covered by the seat.

Yeah, after reviewing SpanishFlyer's procedure, I can see what was meant. Leaving rubber stand-offs "A" and "E" in my pictures, assures that the seat fits snuggly into the forward holder.

As for cutting the wings on the seat, I would prefer to take out only the foam and leave the wings, so that all of those ugly bolts and other hardware is still covered...don't know nor do I think that is possible and I am sure SpanishFlyer had taken all of the angles into consideration when deciding to cut the wings...

SpanishFlyer...thanks for the detailed info and pictures...and glad that you were able to get some more foot hold on the ground...ride safe...

Looks like you've all got a good handle on it!

What i was refering to with "don't throw 1 out" was that it can be used again to help hold the seat lower. Kinda hard to fit the seat on without popping it off, but if you get the front "wings" on the seat located, (just a little) then hold the back of the seat up a little while you push down and forward in the middle, it locates ok.
Wow - did that make sense?! It's totally optional!
