TOPIC: EXUP Eliminator

EXUP Eliminator 4 years 1 month ago #1

Finally got some time this weekend to work a little on the bike. Removed the AIS - this one is going to be a winner. No more popping on decel - None whatsoever. Also installed the map switch, the Power Commander Hub, the ignition module and a wideband commander bridge, that displays its data on the LCD.

When I was finally done with all the cabling, it took a quick look at the EXUP servo, that has nerved me for the past couple months as is does this back and forth wiggle since there is not load on it - the cables have been disconnected.

As with any servo setup, the solve to an electronic eliminator could not be difficult. Turns out it is way easier that many thought. I built a little 1x1 inch prototype (see attached picture). I will run this through the CAD and get a nice tiny one made, just like the TopSpeed.

This electronic circuit also works great during riding, when the ECU tries to adjust the EXUP. It just keeps palying along. No mechanical parts, only draws about 1mA unless I add an LED, might be cool for testing purposes.

Will take a few weeks before I get the first set of prototypes back. Will be similar to the TopSpeed, just smaller.

Requires 4 connections. Same screw type connector as on the TopSpeed.

I will keep you posted.

Here is the CAD version of it:

It is only 1/2 x 3/4 inch in size. Smaller that a quarter coin.

Hey Oliver, what is this AIS that you speak of?
and also i sometimes miss such info when it comes and goes, what exactly is achieved by getting rid of the exup valve?

The AIS is an air injection system. It injects air into the exhaust for a more complete burn off. If you switch to a full exhaust system (for off road racing purposes of course) you might want to eliminate the AIS. It is under the left scoop. In addition to eliminating the popping, you also clear out the air intake passage. and loose some weight.

The EXUp valve is an exhaust valve. Only used with the stock exhaust. Most pipes out there eliminate that valve. As such the cables coming down from inside the rear fender (where the servo sits) get disconnected by most folk, once a new exhaust has been installed. Without those cables, the servo is really no go and in most cases will wiggle back and forth (you can hear it once you turn off the engine through the kill switch). Its also about 1/2 a pound of no dead weight.

This eliminator gets rid of the EXUP servo and replaces it with a small, simple electronics board.
That way you don't get an engine warning light when you disconnect the servo.

Hope this helps!

Oliver,
On the AIS, did you make block off plates or just plug the tubes? Were there any accociated sensors?

Thanks,
Vern

The easier way is to just unplug the servo cables. You will still have to keep the box and wiring plugged in though so as not to have the engine light come on.

The only thing you get by removing the actual exup servo box is a little more space and a 9.6 ounce weight reduction. I'm not sure that's worth doing all that wiring for...

I have been running without the cables for the past 4 months. Once you try it you will know why you want to get rid of it. Every time you stop the servo goes into an infinite back and forth wobble - since there is no load on it. Just like on the R6 and R1.

The more custom pipes are out there the more people will notice.

As for weight: 9.x ounces are more than 1/2 lbs. 1/2 lbs for the exup, 3/4 lbs for the AIS, ... it all ads up.
