TOPIC: LET's get RADICAL

LET's get RADICAL 2 years, 8 months ago #1

Being 57 anything you do to modify your bike will make you feel like you have done something radical, even if it isn't.
I am a bit stuck on the seventies, when I was working as a bike mechanic in London. At that time clip-ons and clubman bars where the way to go if you wanted a change in attitude; some rear sets and a hump back seat and you are in business; then you install a megaphone and you have achieved your goal.
Cutting all the crap, the fact is that I already have the rear sets, so I had to go search a set of bars and I think I got the one's that suit the VMX17 best. I know that taste for making changes to your bike is totally individual and that things you like might make others puke
Funny thing about the bars I purchased is that they are manufactured in Italy, there are more than five reps. in Spain, but none were interested enough so as to get them for me, so eventually I had to purchase them in the US
Ended up paying more, but as I say, It has made my day.
Due to the fact that our standard bars are 22 mm but grow to be 28 in the center, I have to make a set of bushings since the after market bars are 22 mm all the way.
So what you are about to see is just held-up with pins, so bear in mind that the final job is not accomplished just yet. Nevertheless, it shows pretty well what it will look like once I´m done. My new riding position will be leaning forward more and well protected from the wind. My arms will be in a narrower position in an in between an RR and a custom, somewhere along those lines.
I will lose a bit of turning ability so my grips don't hit the scoops; will have to watch out so I don't trap my fingers between them.
Really looking forward to riding the bike with my new (really old design) Tommaselli three piece bars.....
Take a look and give me your opinion

Man I loved my Tommaselli clip ons! Had them on the H-1 Kawasaki & it melded you to the bike for extreme wheelie control Nicely done (as usual) SF

I'm sure they'll feel fine at speed. It's the slow speeds that would worry me.

Thanks for your comments,

I have now added a few pics of the finished product and I'm very pleased with the results; regarding the effort when turning at slow speeds or standing rotation of the steering is pretty much the same since the total width of the bars right now is just a mere inch narrower. The other thing I have achieved as a by-product is the blending in of the ever so ugly but great wind protecting small screen I have; it now makes a kind of a smaller cluster cockpit, everything right there kind of feeling, difficult to explain but easy to see. It also makes the whole bike more sporty looking and even more MASSIVE/MACHO thing of a bike. As you grab the grips and rest the feet on the rear sets, you instantly notice how much more you are leaning forward; my tummy now rests on the tank (beer gut ), but comfy.
Pity it is pouring with rain, so I haven't been able to ride it just yet, but looking forward to meeting our French friends this Sunday, whatever the weather brings. Some 40-50 maxes will take part in this long weekend.
