TOPIC: Kick the Cat installed. Initial impression.

Kick the Cat installed. Initial impression. 2 years, 6 months ago #1

I put my exhaust system on today.

Fit was very nice.
Quality good.

I'm not very impressed with the sound with the stock mufflers. It sounds flat at idle almost like the throttle bodies are out of sync. I also discovered that the left hand heat shield (one that attaches to the muffler) will need to be modified to fit over the new exhaust. I spent the day looking for T-Clamps to attach the front header pipes. I assume they do not come with the system as none were included. I may be buying or fabricating new mufflers soon.

I'm still trying to figure out how to set the fuel tuner. I'm having trouble telling which mode that I am in. It seems to skip modes. That or I may be getting color blind. Maybe its not supposed to hit them in the order posted in instructions? Does anyone know? I've watched Vmax Gurus video on changing the settings. He talks about three adjustment modes whereas the one I received has 6 I believe.

It would be nice if there were a little better instruction and a couple of T-clamps included with the system.

Will know more after ride to Hulett Ham&Jam tomorow.

May give UFO a call and have him walk me through the programmer set up.

Yep time for a muffler change! will sound much better.
Keep playing with your tuner and you'll get used to it. I was confused at first spent about 30 min with it and finally got it straight and had to read the instructions at least 3 times. Once you see it, its easy. As you start, bike idleing, its in the green mode push the middle button and it goes to the next mode......it flashed the light as to where its set at just for a few seconds, if you don't do anything it goes back. So you can scroll threw each color mode just hit the middle button right after it shows you the setting and it goes to the next one and next one till your back to the green one again. If you want to change the setting .........in the color showing, as soon as it flashes which one its on you've got to get on the left or right button to move it up or down quick or it will go back. Hope this helps......Darren

+1 on you got to be quick!! I take a quick peek at my makeshift worksheet when Im on setting #5.. then look back.. crap, back to #1 again.. Just double check your work, write everything down so you have a point of reference and take a quick peek at the MaxTuner thread if you need some settings that others have used.

I just installed a Kick the Cat on a friends bike... It fits, but it wasn't easy at all to get the stock mufflers to line up. Ended up completely loosening every pipe and the cross connector. The outlet pipes barely engage the mufflers. Sounds great, but the fit could be a lot better IMHO. If it wasn't such a pain, I'd pull it off to compare to the cat... but it's on now. The front RH pipe hangs slightly lower, but everything is as high as it can physically go. Just an observation. Noticeable power increase right out of the box!

Thats strange as I only had to loosen the front header pipes and cross over clamps. Left pipe had to be installed first then right. Intakes slipped all the way on the front header pipe and mufflers all the way onto the outlet. I wouldn't think there could be that much difference in the pipes or the bikes.

The best meathod I found was to slip the kick the cat on to the front header pipe then rotate it up onto the rear header pipe.

That's what we tried, but when the mufflers went back on, the right hand side only engaged by 1/8" or so. the left was fine, but the front header pipe was at a down angle and the Kick the Cat pipe was about 1/2" from the rear stop on the stock pipe as well. The other side was up to the stop, but didn't engage the muffler enough. We ended up using my bike for comparison, and had the pipes on and off, everything loose, etc.

I don't think he's happy with the pipe and it will be coming back off. When it does, I'll compare it to the cat box and see if I need my wrenches taken away or not....

It sounds like the right header pipe may not be seated properly on the head. Loosen both head bolts and bring them up evenly. Loosen everything up on the right side plus the cross over clamp first.

If the header pipe has a down angle it cannot be seated properly! This would also make it short at the back.

Muffler has about 1/2inch of adustment also.
