TOPIC: Homemade rack for Vmax

Re: Homemade rack for Vmax 9 months 3 days ago #41

I modified the Ventura pack rack which I had fitted to my MT-01 just copied the fitting from the Yamaha rack for the VMax so I can still keep the backrest as well as the rack then I can put the backpack bag on the rack tent on top not forgetting the 12 pack of beer to give it balance and still take a passenger

O Blya,
Great set-up, looks well made.
What material is the bracket made from?

I like how you've positioned the storage weight forward over the passenger seat plus you've left plenty of clearance over the fender.

would/have you consider/ed a version of this mount that merges with the yammi back rest bracket?

It would sit higher (to clear the back rest) or a hole cut out area could allow the back rest to protrude through; but keeping the back rest bracket would be important to me.

Where the 6mm bolts attach to the frame (your rack and the back rest bracket) could mount a hand grip for the rear passenger......when hauling cargo instead of passenger, this handle point could merge/bolt to your diamond plate rack.....thus you are only adding and removing the diamond rack....fender mounts would remain in tact, as is.

something else to consider...your system "as is" would be great for larger auxiliary tanks (i.e. 5 gallons)

greatly appreciate this post...love to see these contributions (PM coming your way)

That's a really good set up, and I guess, if you wanted, you could attach the Yamaha hard panniers to this set up as well.

Darel!
All the components are made out of 6061 aluminum. Mounting bolts are stainless steel.
All your suggestions are easy to accommodate, if there was a demand.

I need a luggage rack again. But I still do not find Yamaha OEM luggage rack functional enough. It seems to me more of a styling statement. And as such, it looks to me quite nice. But the size of it is somewhat inadequate to my needs. On the other end of a spectrum, there is a Ventura luggage rack. This one appears to me as a lot more functional. Definitely a great hauler. But it is tubular construction, and I would like something of a billet aluminum nature. So, this time I am attempting to blend the styling and functionality a little differently.
Here is just a short update on making the "second edition" of a luggage rack.

O Blya, you sure do good work. Your first iteration looked really nice and very functional. However I really like where you are going with the 2nd rack. Keep up the great work!!

Yep good work could just put some threaded holes in the side to screw some bobbins in to use as anchor points for bungee ties

Drawing - done!
Solid Modeling - done!
CNC programming - done!
Machining - done!
It was truly "labor" day weekend!

I finally finished my luggage rack. The "shelf" is contoured after the footprint of two gas cans. They give me total of 4 extra gallons, which doubles my range between the gas stations. As I mentioned before, the "shelf" can be of any shape.

I was not sure about the final color of the rack. Since it is made out of 6061 aluminum, I have several finishing options:

1. Leave it the way it is
2. Clear anodize
3. Black anodize
4. Chrome plate.

I am gravitating toward clear anodizing, to make it look like the air scoops. And in case I don't like it, I made one more complete luggage rack to try another color option.
:winkwink:
