Since Februrary? That's a hell of a lot of coats. That's enough to piss anyone off.

They have only done about 2 days work on it over the duration. For some reason it has fallen into the category of "the job that I work on on Saturday mornings". It seems to be a consequence of me not wanting to be a mongrel and hassle them. I should have remembered the mantra "never tell a mechanic that there is no rush".

Thanks for the support with regard to the Viffer folks. I took her for a test run yesterday and I ended up at my mechanics shop. And then I left it there. :scary: very scary. Aparently the bike had been regularly serviced by some Honda guru in Canberra..... What a f#ckn MUPPET! Why I hear you ask? Here's the initial list just from feel and the inspection at the workshop;
Rear brake doesn't work at all, ticking noise (top end) associated with oil pressure, neutral sensor faulty, forks twisted, triple
clamp not straight, clip ons out of alighnment, rear shock is rooted, front shocks have massive dive (rooted), gearbox felt like stirring porridge, front disks are a poofteenth away from being undersized and calipers lacked feel even with braided lines, dodgy plastic welding on the faring with various broken tabs and over tightened fixing points adding to stress on the farings and effectively manufacturing cracks and warping panels, the new pilot power road 2 on the front and road 3 on the rear are rubbish.

It felt like riding on glass and herding cats at the same time.

I'm sure that the rest of you have the same philosophy as me in that when you repair or service a bike or part, you CLEAN the area and apply the correct amount lube etc. This bike is filthy. Every part under the faring is full of grime and gunk, not to mention stray wires throughout. When sitting in the saddle you can see the calamity of crap just underneath the dash.

This project will take some time and now that I understand the enormity if the task, I'll need to do some careful planning and research in order to get it right. I had initially intended to register the bike today but I've asked my mechanic to ride it and then go though it with a fine tooth comb in order to give me an accurate list.

Watch this space. :cry:

Some of you may be wondering why, in light of the bikes' condition, I intend to persevere with the rebuild. The answer is that it belonged to a dearly departed friend to whom I made a promise. To take care of his baby. The Rocket Man left us some years ago now but his mighty Viffer will be returned to glory and live on. I'm sure that he would approve of the upgrades I'm considering.
This is a bike that means something, not just to me but to others that knew Rocket. It's up to me to ensure that it is done properly.
It will therefore not be a fast rebuild, but the end result will be worth it.

That's a real shame Tom.
I know how much you were looking forward to getting her back
On the bright side we all know how good you are restorations and if you put in the effort she will be better than new
I am sure you will do your friend proud.

Still focused on the cobra rebuild, but at least that is moving ahead with it progressing from the paint shop and back to the hoist :-)

I don't want to rush the Viffer now that I know it needs a full rebuild so it's sitting on the centre stand under a cover in the shed.

One project at a time, I want them both to be purrrrrrfect :guitar:
