Ducati issues three recalls for Panigale
Publish Date: Aug 20, 2012 DUCATI has issued three recalls for the 1199 Panigale, all affecting roughly 2,400 units for the 2012-13 model years, the NHTSA announced. All recalls affect models made between March 16 through July 12, the agency said. Recall No. 12V392000 affects the engine/engine cooling system. The exhaust butterfly valve bowden cable cover could melt or burn due to excessive heat from the catalytic converter. This in turn could lead to smoke and/or fire, the agency stated. Ducati will notify owners, and dealers are asked to replace the old exhaust butterfly valve bowden cable cover with a new one free of charge. Recall No. 12V399000 cites an incorrect assembly tolerance, which will cause the Uniball bearing on the damper rod eyelet to slip out of its seat on the Ohlins steering damper. The steering damper could then detach from its mounting point, leading to loss of control of the motorcycle, NHTSA said. Ducati will notify owners, and dealers are asked to install a special washer at the steering damper's mounting point, free of charge. The third recall, No. 12V400000, announces that screws which secure the steering damper to the steering head could fall out, due to an insufficient amount of Loctite applied to the threads. The steering damper could then detach from the steering head, leading to loss of control of the motorcycle. Again, Ducati will notify owners. Dealers are asked to remove both screws, clean the threads, apply the proper amount of Loctite and tighten to the proper torque settings, free of charge. Ducati's recall number for all of the above fixes is RCL-12-006, the NHTSA reported. Other recalls issued by Ducati since May: Ducati recalls small number of Diavels for kickstand fix Rear suspension could detach from Panigale Ducati recalling various models for brake problem |

I was looking at a Panigale at a cruise-in a few weeks ago. It is an incredible bike but its concept scares me a little. The engine is a stressed frame member just like the VMAX, but Ducati takes it a step further and eliminates most of the frame. The engine is the main frame element. If the engine were removed, the bike would fall apart. The monoshock is also side-mounted on one side of the frame which looks like it would put a lot of stress on the left side of the frame.
All of this is very cool and serves to reduce weight if it works. Some of those recalls mentioned seem to point directly at problems with some of these innovations. |
