TOPIC: Can you "jump start" a fuel injected bike??

Can you "jump start" a fuel injected bike?? 4 years 1 month ago #1

I never even thought about it before....and it came up in conversation......

Like say if you had a weak battery... not enough to turn over, but needed to start it.

Install the jumper cables, let the battery take a charge for a short time and all should be good to go. The battery must be able to hold a small reserve or the electrical charging system will be strained.

You need a good 12 volt to make the ECU properly operate when the fuel pump kicks on. Most systems charge @ 14 volts.

You can jump start a fuel injected bike, just can't push start them.

yeah,

I meant push start.

That's something to remember.....

I live on a hill. and yeah that would suck to ever have to push one back up. I had to do it once with the Gen 1. It almost killed me.

My 2000 Vmax is EFI and I have push started it when my battery was to low to feed the ecu. In fact, Summer 2008, Sean Morley pushed started my bike in 2nd gear while in Eureka Springs, Ark. Vmoa Rally. When not drawing voltage to run the starter, the push method worked great and after a lengthy ride I never had another issue.

good luck push starting a bike that has been sitting there not being used for 3 or4 months with battery dead and more then likely the gas has dryed up in the injecters and there is no way to get gas to the injecters.. That's what we had to deal with and I it just wasn't going to happen.. BUT I'm sure someone out there could do it! Just not me..

You can jump start a fuel injected car, so what's the difference?

They are saying you can JUMP start a FI vehicle (connecting a power source to it) but you can not PUSH or BUMP start a FI vehicle (turning the engine over manually via the driveline)

Edit;
"They" does NOT include Rick52. He posted that he did PUSH start his FI Gen 1.

Yes you can absolutely jumpstart most EFI bikes - at least Yamaha's.

It happened many times over the past 10 years that fellow Warriors, Raiders, Roadliners, .... needed a good push because of battery problems.

You just need enough velocity to do so.

My favorite one: 3youngs Warrior - dead battery in 115F weather 2-3 years ago here in California. Got us sweating for sure. ;-)

Have not had the 'opportunity' to push start a VMax. Definitely would want a down hill stretch for that one.

Not sure you can do it with absolutely zero battery. But as long as the display comes on, you can do it - even if you can crank the starter any longer.

When a battery is that low, you should get it checked for damages. A totally bad battery can damage the charging system of the bike by drawing high amounts of currents continuously.
