All about geometry. A single shock in the center will allow for smoother, more precise dampening of the rear tire. The old outboard shocks are fine until you want more aggressive handling. Think of leaning a motorcycle into a corner, the outboard shock is not compressed the same distance as the inboard one creating flex in the swingarm and uneven expansion when coming upright. As handling is a major selling point and most of the mods to the old Max are handling upgrades the mono shock is the logical choice.

Thanks Jim. That was probably worth three cents. I guess we'll find out when we ride it ourselves. Don't think that those that don't really ride very aggressively in the twisties (like me) will notice the improvement but an upgrade is always worth having.

As I have about $4000 in suspension upgrades (solid motor mounts, full Progressive suspension, 18" wheels w/radials.... and the list goes on) just so I can scrape the pegs when hammering the twisties I would love the upgraded suspension.

But the bike on the front page of this site does not seem to have a mono-shock, that is a pity as we are talking 2008 here.
But still not enough to put me off the bike.. I find it interesting that the scoops are going to be functional as well as decorative.. That is a nice idea.. |

We have not gotten our hands on new pics with the redesigned mono shock rear. The Tokyo photos are the only solid evidence of the re-design in progress. |
